The ultimate workout playlist
Listening to music doesn’t just relieve boredom while exercising but also improves the quality of your workout by putting you in a better mood and increasing stamina, claims several studies.
It is said that music that is motivational and synchronized with your workout has positive psychological and physical effects. For example, if a song has strong and steady beats to which you can run or pedal, you will be able exercise for longer and work harder.
There are studies to prove that exercising while listening to music can enhance physical performance.
1x1 polls
One such study conducted in 2006 found that while listening to fast paced music, people increased their pace and distance travelled on the treadmill without becoming much tired. Several other studies drew similar conclusions.
Another study lead by a sports psychologist in 2010 found that music can increase workout performance in two ways; one by delaying fatigue and other by increasing the workout capacity. Music leads to higher than expected levels of endurance, power, strength and productivity, adds the study.
It is also said music helps you in exercising by distracting you from pain caused during the workout by competing sensory stimuli.
The most popular types of music for exercising
A study conducted in 2012 asked its 184 student participants about the type of music they preferred listening to while working out. The winner was, any guesses? Hip hop with 27.7% students voting for it followed by rock (24%), pop (20.3%) and country (12.7%). And most of the participants said they listened to music while working out because it makes them workout harder.

Also, people who listened to music while working out required 7 per cent less oxygen, which means that music can help maintain a set pace and increase efficiency.
