The most effective exercise to lower HbA1c level in a diabetic person

Controlling blood sugar is the biggest challenge for someone who’s living with diabetes. Among the many diabetes indicators HbA1c remains a crucial one. HbA1c, or glycated hemoglobin, measures the average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. It reflects how well diabetes is managed in the long term. Higher HbA1c risks are linked with complications like nerve damage, heart disease, and kidney issues. Medication and diet are essential, but exercise is one of the most powerful and natural tools to improve glucose control.

Studies show some physical activities have a stronger and more lasting impact than others in blood sugar control. Here we explore which is the most effective form of exercise for lowering HbA1c, and three of them that stand out are: ​


1. 10-minute walk after every meal
2. 40-minute morning walk on an empty stomach
3. 30-minute strength training session


Here we explore which one of these three exercises is most effective for long term diabetes management.

10-minute walk after every meal

This activity sounds too simple, but studies suggest that even a short walk after meals is remarkably effective in blood sugar regulation. According to a study published by the American Diabetes Association, older individuals who did three 15-minute walks after each main meal achieved significantly better 24-hour glycemic control compared to a single longer walk. According to an Instagram post by neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar, a 10-minute walk after every meal can reduce around 0.7% of HbA1c when done consistently.
By consistently lowering after-meal blood sugar, these short walks can lead to a measurable reduction in HbA1c over time, especially when the spike after meals is a significant contributor to elevated HbA1c.

40-minute morning walk on an empty stomach

Empty stomach morning walks are one of the most time tested ways to manage diabetes. Early morning exercise triggers fat metabolism and improves how the body responds to insulin throughout the day. Dr Sudhir Kumar quotes that a 40-minute morning walk on an empty stomach can reduce around 0.5% of HbA1c. He adds these walks are best for people aiming for weight loss, also for metabolic health. However, the effect on HbA1c reduction is slightly less than post-meal walking.

30-minutes of strength training

Strength training, or resistance exercise changes metabolism at the cellular level. Muscle building increases the body’s ability to store and use glucose efficiently. A systematic review in NIH found that resistance training (RT) significantly reduced HbA1c in type 2 diabetes mellitus individuals and weighted mean difference of 0.39%. As per Dr. Sudhir Kumar, when performed regularly, strength training can show around 1% of reduction in HbA1c.

In other words, strength training improves insulin sensitivity, reduces visceral fat, and increases lean muscle mass, all of which support better long-term glucose control and lower HbA1c.

The most effective exercise

If long term health is considered, strength training appears to leave the best impact for HbA1c reduction. Dr. Sudhir also emphasizes that the greatest immediate effect on lowering HbA1c is through strength training, when done regularly.
Dr. Sudhir says, the best overall plan is a combination of both. Combining daily post-meal short walks with strength training 2–3 times a week can provide maximum benefits for HbA1c reduction.
