Should you exercise barefoot? Pros and cons explained
Exercising barefoot has been practiced since ancient times, and may offer unique benefits. Exercising barefoot dates back to ancient Greece. Historical accounts suggest that Greek runner Pheidippides, known as the first marathoner, ran barefoot, achieving multiple victories. The ancient Spartans also trained barefoot as part of their military regimen. Even today, barefoot workouts are practiced in regions like Kenya and northern Mexico. While barefoot exercise can improve foot strength, it can also increase the risk of leg injuries.
Barefoot exercise improves balance, coordination, and foot strength. With proper form, it can also relieve pain in the lower arch, which often becomes strained from repetitive movements. It enhances proprioception, making you more aware of body movements and supporting balance and stability.
Exercising barefoot strengthens muscles, as they work harder without the support of shoes. Shoes tend to restrict movement, but barefoot workouts allow for more natural movement, increasing sensory feedback from the sole to the brain. This direct connection to the ground activates core muscles, generating more energy in the body.
Exercising barefoot is challenging and increases the risk of injury. You may face dangers from sharp objects, uneven surfaces, and infections like athlete’s foot and warts. Exercising on soil can lead to fungal infections, and cold, tiled floors can be uncomfortable without support.
Since our feet aren’t used to direct contact with the ground, it may cause pain and discomfort. Feet are particularly vulnerable to scrapes and cuts, especially when exercising outdoors. Barefoot workouts can also stress the joints and muscles as body weight falls directly on them without the support of shoes.
Exercising barefoot can be beneficial but requires a gradual start. Begin with flat surfaces to minimize discomfort and reduce the risk of injury. Instead of running or high-impact activities, focus on strength-based training, which places controlled weight on the legs.
