Grandma breaks world record by doing 1,575 push ups: This is what keeps her fit
At the age of 59, people often think about increasing bone density and start surviving on supplements, but for Canada's DonnaJean Wilde it is not the same.
This superhero grandma did 1,575 push ups in 60 minutes and has been listed by the Guinness World Records. "Her win comes right after her March title, obtained for the longest time in an abdominal plank position (female), when she held a plank for 4 hr 30 min and 11 sec," as per an official statement. Donna took home the award for most push ups in one hour (female).
“I had to fight back the happy tears and emotions and keep going,” said DonnaJean. “I still felt quite strong and I was aiming for a high number of push ups to complete in the next 17 minutes.”
Her grandkids, 11 and 12 years old cheered on her when she took the attempt.
"The push ups had to be performed to a certain standard, requiring a 90 degree elbow flexion at the bottom of the push up, with full extension of the arm when pushing up. Independent witnesses displayed her current total on a scoreboard, and as DonnaJean took intermittent breathers, she kept the number of push ups in her line of sight," official statement from the Guinness World Records. “She started the hour strong, completing 620 push ups in the first 20 minutes. She then alternated between 20 and five push ups per rep for the next 15 minutes, eventually surpassing the previous record and completing an average of about 10 push ups per rep until the time expired,” it added.
To prepare for the world record, she followed an intense routine. She spent hours practicing it in Beazer, Alberta in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and let the quiet strength of nature inspire her performance. Consistency and regular practice is what kept her spirits high to attempt this difficult challenge.
Push-ups are excellent for building and maintaining upper body strength in seniors. They target key muscle groups like the chest, shoulders, and triceps, which are crucial for daily tasks such as lifting and pushing. By engaging the abdominal muscles, push-ups improve core strength, promoting better posture and reducing the risk of back pain. A stable core is essential for seniors to maintain balance and mobility. Performing push-ups increases heart rate, enhancing blood circulation and cardiovascular health. This low-impact exercise helps seniors maintain endurance and reduce the risk of heart-related conditions.
