Some people doubt that since watermelon is sweet, it might be high in sugar content. However, studies have shown that 100 grams of raw watermelon holds only about 6.2 grams of sugar.


High water composition and fiber content in watermelon helps promote satiety, so you do not feel hungry in between meals. Even if you do, watermelon can be your perfect snack and a small portion is enough to satisfy your hunger. Further, it is low in calories so you do not need to fear weight gain. In fact, watermelon is a negative calorie fruit and tends to burn more calories during digestion than add in.

Several nutrients in watermelon can support a healthy heart. Studies have found that lycopene (present in watermelon) may help lower cholesterol and maintain blood pressure. It may also help prevent oxidative damage caused by high cholesterol levels. Further, citrulline, an amino acid in watermelon, produces nitric oxide that prevents blood pressure from spiking suddenly.

Lycopene is also great for your vision. According to research, lycopene’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can help prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – a common eye problem that can cause blindness in older adults.
