North Indian Vs South India: What is better?

When we begin talking about cuisines, the two most prominent foods would be South Indian and North Indian food. In India, the two primary categories of food are these two despite being poles apart. While North Indian cuisine boasts of a rich variety of breads, rice and vegetable preparations, South Indian cuisine is a rich mixture of spices and various preparations of principally rice flour. Both cuisines are very different and most easily accessible in both parts of the country. Fitness enthusiasts are mostly keen on knowing which of these is better for consumption for aiding weight loss and maintaining a healthy body. So we bring to you a detailed assessment of both so that you can decide what to have.

2/5

South Indian cuisine

It is mostly believed that South Indian cuisine consists largely of vegetarian food but it is not entirely true. Even though idlis and dosas dominate the South Indian food scenario, the cuisine also has abundant non-vegetarian options despite being dominated by vegetarian food items. The main thing about South Indian cuisine is that most things that it contains are made of rice. Apart from rice, key ingredients used in South Indian Cuisine would be ginger, garlic, plantains, tamarind, native fruits, coconut, and fresh green chilies. These ingredients are famous for their flavor, and amazing health benefits.

If you look for non-vegetarian options in South Indian cuisine, you will find ample seafood. The Malabar coast is famous for its variety of fish.

3/5

North Indian cuisine

North Indian cuisine contains a rich variety of breads like naan, chapatis and rotis which are made primarily by using wheat as the chief ingredient. This leads us to the belief that North Indian food is lighter as compared to South Indian cuisine. North Indian Cuisine is strongly influenced by the Mughal way of cooking. These are techniques you will find in Kashmir, Hyderabad, and Central Asia. These are dishes that were enjoyed by Nawabs several decades ago. These include rajma dal, lacha paratha, dal bati, dum aloo, palak paneer, and many more.

4/5

Which is healthier?

It is never easy to determine which cuisine is healthier because the calorie content of a single serving depends on what you are having along with breads or dosa. All components of food are equally responsible for the overall effect that it will have on a person’s health and weight.

5/5

What to do

Balancing out a meal is the most important step towards creating the perfect meal that is healthy and does not contain any extra calories that would hamper weight loss. If you have idlis then make sure that your sambar preparation is full of vegetables that will balance out the carbs from rice. Similarly in North Indian cuisine, breads can balance out any heavy vegetable or curry preparations.
