Health benefits of saffron to reap

Saffron is a flavourful spice with a strong fragrance, known for its wide-ranging health benefits. Known to be the most expensive spice in the world, saffron is gathered by hand from the Crocus sativus flower, commonly known as the “saffron crocus.”


Besides the sweet, floral and earthy taste, the spice is also known for its medicinal properties known to fight cancer and other chronic illnesses. Rich in antioxidants, it helps wipe out harmful free radicals associated with illnesses like cancer. Other than that, saffron can aid our health in many other ways. It may help prevent cardiovascular diseases

Given that saffron is packed with minerals like thiamin and riboflavin, it ensures a healthy heart and keeps cardiovascular diseases at bay. Adding saffron to your diet everyday helps in dilating the blood, removing any blockages in the arteries. It also improves the blood circulatory system, in turn reducing blood pressure and preventing heart attacks and strokes.

The spice may act like an aphrodisiac, improve sex-life

Saffron may also help boost libido. Known for its potential aphrodisiac properties, it is said to work best for people taking antidepressants. Clinical studies have found a positive impact of saffron on erectile dysfunction and overall sex drive, however, it is less likely to improve semen quality.

Works as an antidepressant

Also known as the 'sunshine spice', saffron is known to improve mood. As per a study published in the Journal of Behavioral and Brain Science, it was found that a saffron extract could increase dopamine levels in the brain without changing the levels of other brain hormones. That said, saffron supplements could boost mood and also act as antidepressants.

Aids in weight loss

Research suggests that saffron may help limit appetite, preventing unnecessary binge-eating and aiding in weight loss. A study published in the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic claims that saffron extract may help reduce their body mass index (BMI), especially in patients with coronary artery disease. That said, saffron can help all weight watchers.

It may improve memory and boost brain power

Crocin and crocetin are two chemical compounds in saffron researchers believe may boost memory and improve brain functions. A 2015 study suggests that saffron may reduce inflammation and oxidative damage in the brain, preventing some possible nervous system damage. Some research also suggests that consuming saffron may also help ease symptoms of Alzheimer's.
