People with THESE 4 conditions should refrain from consuming chia seeds

Hailed as ‘super food', chia seeds are extremely popular around the world. These tiny seeds are undoubtedly rich in fiber, proteins, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and other essential minerals. Numerous studies have recognized chia seeds and their benefits ranging from weight management to improved heart health.

Despite the advantages, chia seeds aren’t ‘everyone’s bowl of meal’! Meaning, chia seeds aren’t recommended for everyone. Certain people need to be more cautious with chia seeds, as the high fiber content or the effects on blood pressure can become a reason that might invite complications. Below we mention 4 conditions and how people suffering from these should not consume chia seeds.

2/6

Individuals with low blood pressure

While chia seeds may be beneficial for people with hypertension, they can have the opposite effect on people with low blood pressure. Studies suggest that chia seeds can have a hypotensive effect (blood pressure lowering), which may be advantageous for individuals with elevated blood pressure. However, for individuals with low blood pressure, chia seeds can cause dizziness, fatigue, and fainting by lowering the blood pressure even more.

3/6

People on blood thinners

Individuals on blood thinning medication should avoid consuming chia seeds as it can affect the effect of drugs, and may lead to excessive bleeding or bruising. This is because chia seeds contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which have natural blood-thinning properties. Such individuals must consult a doctor or dietician before adding chia seeds to their diet.

4/6

People with kidney disease

Chia seeds have high content of potassium and phosphorus. These minerals need to be closely monitored for individuals with chronic kidney disease. Excessive intake of potassium can lead to hyperkalemia, a condition which is harmful for kidney function.
Also, chia seeds are high in oxalates. This compound can contribute to the formation of kidney stones.

5/6

Individuals with Gut issues

Chia seeds are known for their notable fiber content. Just about two tablespoons of chia seeds contains 10 grams of fiber. Even though fiber is known for its properties supporting gut health, too much of it can cause digestive discomfort. If not consumed properly, the high fiber content in chia seeds can cause bloating, diarrhea and even constipation.

Caution before consideration is important

Chia seeds are a powerful source of nutrients, but then again, like all powerful foods, chia seeds aren’t suitable for everyone. Certain conditions demand more careful considerations. What’s beneficial for someone doesn’t mean it can be beneficial for others as well. Incorporating new additions to diet should be done cautiously, and people with medical complications should be more careful.
