Proteins are the building blocks of the body

Protein is an essential nutrient group that the body requires in good amounts for optimal functioning. Proteins are made up of smaller structures known as amino acids that come together to form a chain like structure which are further folded in complex structures and are known as proteins. Proteins are also known as ‘body-building’ foods because they essentially make up the muscles, tendons, organs, enzymes and hormones. Largely, proteins are the building blocks of the body and are required in good quantities for repair and rebuilding of damaged tissues and cells.

Benefits

Proteins are extremely helpful for various other reasons such as they can help gain muscle and strength. Lean muscle building facilitates weight loss, particularly fat loss and improves the composition of the body as it promotes healthy muscle building and eliminates fat. Protein thus helps good weight loss and people who are trying to lose weight by working out in the gym or at home, need more protein in their everyday diet. In addition to this, consumption of protein helps one stay fuller for longer which reduces unhealthy calorie intake and lose weight. Strength is another factor that is improved by protein intake. When one exercises, new muscle fibers are added when the existing ones experience external resistance. Thus, they help build muscle as well as strength.

Consumption and requirement

Protein is required by different individuals in different quantities because there are several factors that influence the amount of protein that one should consume. Body weight, height, muscle mass, physical goals, deficiencies, age group and injury. Pregnancy, weight training and injuries are special conditions that increase the protein requirement of an individual. Since protein requirements depend on so many factors, it is vital for every individual to assess their health conditions and determine the amount of protein that they should consume. Pregnant and lactating women also require more protein on an everyday basis because the body requires protein for two individuals at once. Protein amounts need to be monitored when women are pregnant or lactating.

Adding protein to your everyday diet

Adding protein to everyday diet is something that you should practice for the body to function optimally. Proper functioning of the body and mind entail balanced nutrient intake, be it any food group. To increase protein intake on a regular basis, ensure that you eat your protein first. Consuming protein rich foods first thing as a part of your meal will allow you to consume sufficient amounts of protein. Instead of having cereal for breakfast, try and have eggs every day, for they are a better source of good quality protein. Lastly, include plenty of cheese in your snacks so that you get a good dose of good quality protein.
