Apple Cider Vinegar: Busting myths you should stop believing in

What is apple cider vinegar (ACV)?

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has surged in popularity in recent years due to its purported health and weight loss benefits. ACV is made by crushing apples and then squeezing out the juice. Bacteria and yeast are added to the liquid, which converts the sugars to alcohol. Next, the alcohol is converted into vinegar by acetic acid-forming bacteria. Amidst its rising usage and popularity, several myths and misconceptions are prevalent. Here are some of these myths surrounding apple cider vinegar and the truth behind them.

2/6

ACV and weight loss

One prevalent belief is that ACV is a miracle weight-loss elixir. While some studies suggest that it may have a modest effect on metabolism or aid in reducing appetite, there's insufficient scientific evidence to support the notion that apple cider vinegar alone leads to substantial weight loss. Rather than being a standalone solution, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine remain pivotal for sustainable weight management.

3/6

ACV as home remedy for poor health

While ACV might aid in soothing sore throats or skin irritations, relying solely on apple cider vinegar for severe illnesses or chronic conditions is unwise and could potentially delay seeking necessary medical attention. It is also important to note that ACV is acidic and inappropriate consumption can lead to destruction of your tooth enamel and/or low potassium levels in the body.

4/6

ACV and pH balance

There's a misconception that ACV can effectively balance the body's pH levels. The human body possesses its own intricate mechanisms to regulate pH levels, and while acidic outside the body, ACV can't significantly impact the body's internal pH balance. Claims suggesting otherwise often lack scientific substantiation.

5/6

ACV and blood sugar

Another prevailing myth surrounding apple cider vinegar is its purported ability to lower blood sugar levels significantly. While some studies have indicated a potential for modest improvements in insulin sensitivity, particularly for individuals with diabetes, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before incorporating ACV into a diabetes management plan. Relying solely on ACV without proper medical guidance could be detrimental.

6/6

ACV and skin health

Lastly, there's a myth that using apple cider vinegar topically, especially in undiluted form, is safe for all skin types. While some people find it helpful for conditions like acne or sunburn, undiluted ACV can be harsh and cause skin irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. Diluting it before topical application is crucial to avoid adverse reactions.
