Dementia has no cure

It isn't easy to accept the cognitive decline of someone close to you. In fact many experts say that after cancer, dementia is one condition that baffles them since it doesn't have any treatment. Several researches and studies are trying to find a cure for dementia causing diseases but until that is done, researchers are also trying to see for signs that can tell a person's chance of developing dementia later in life.

The link between personality traits and dementia

While there have been casual links drawn with some personality traits, in one recent research, experts studied the personality traits that may actually be linked to how your brain will function in later years.

3/4

The five traits are:

Conscientiousness - This is related to how careful and present you are in any moment

Agreeableness - This is linked to how empathetic, trusting one is and how they try and avoid troubles

Neuroticism - These are people who inch towards problematic situations and emotions

Openness - This is linked to people who are curious and open to experiences

Extroversion - This is when someone is social and likes being active and excited

4/4

Findings

It was found out that people who have a higher degree of neuroticism and lower conscientiousness tend to develop amyloid plaques and insoluble tangles of tau proteins in the brain (both linked to dementia and other disorders).

While other parameters also had some link to the development of brain disorders but these two personalities seem to have shown the stronger link.

While more research needs to be done in this area, experts discovered a connection between these 5 personality traits and cognitive health. A cure may be some years away, but these insights can help the experts to get closer to the solution.
