AIIMS neurologist REVEALS 10 tips to (correctly) measure Blood Pressure at home
Monitoring our blood pressure at home is an essential step in managing hypertension and ensuring overall heart health. However, most people might be doing it wrong! Making mistakes that lead to inaccurate readings. A neurologist from AIIMS, Delhi, shares 10 essential tips to help one measure their blood pressure at home easily and track their cardiovascular health with more confidence and accuracy.
Dr. Priyanka Sherawat, neurologist, suggests 10 easy tips with which one can check their blood pressure at home..
Rest for 5 minutes before measuring
Empty your bladderMake sure that before you take your reading, empty the bladder. A full bladder can give false results.
Avoid caffeine, tea and smoking 30 minutes before
Choose the right arm and position it properlyOne can use either of the arms but it is a good idea to check both, one by one to see if there is any significant difference. A difference of upto 10 mmHg is considered normal. Typically, the left arm is preferred as it is closer to the heart and may give more accurate readings.
Correct cuff placement is the key
Sit upright and stay stillMake sure to have a straight back, feet flat on the floor (not crossed) and the arm supported on a flat surface. Avoid talking or moving during the blood pressure reading.
Take two readings one minute apartAlways take two readings, spaced one minute apart, This helps reduce variability and gives a more accurate average of the blood pressure.
Record the average readings
Measure at the same time dailyFor consistency, measure the blood pressure at the same time each day, preferably in the morning before medication and even in the evening, if one is doing so.
Track and share with the doctorIf one has a trusted doctor, maintain a digital log or manual chart and share it with the healthcare provider for accurate diagnosis and treatment adjustments.
It is imperative to understand, taking extra precautions during home monitoring can lead to more accurate readings, better diagnosis, and improved health outcomes.
