5 supplements those suffering from High Blood Pressure must avoid

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a condition where the force of blood against your artery walls is consistently too high. If uncontrolled, Hypertension produces fatal conditions including heart attacks and strokes. The combination of hypertension with high blood pressure produces negative effects on kidney health. Several people manage their blood pressure through supplements, in addition to their prescribed medications. Some supplements present risks to people with hypertension, because they can create medicine interactions. Here are 5 supplements High BP patients should avoid.

2/8

Licorice Root

The natural ingredient Licorice root exists in tea products, and dietary supplements which serve dual purposes for digestive relief and sore throat treatment. High blood pressure patients need to exercise extreme caution when using licorice root, because it presents significant challenges to their health. The compound glycyrrhizin present in this plant, causes your body to store salt while releasing potassium from your system. The improper balance between blood pressure and body fluids makes the heart function harder because of the blood pressure elevation.

3/8

Bitter Orange

Many weight loss and energy-boosting supplements use bitter orange as an active ingredient. The Synephrine in bitter orange serves as a stimulant that resembles ephedrine, which medical authorities have long banned due to safety reasons. Blood pressure elevation occurs through two mechanisms when using bitter orange supplements: it causes blood vessels to constrict, and heart rate to accelerate. High blood pressure patients, when consuming these, face dangerous side effects including heart palpitations and chest pain and heart attacks.

4/8

Ephedra (Ma Huang)

Ephedra serves as a plant extract, that gained popularity in weight loss and athletic performance supplements. Ephedrine in this plant functions as a potent stimulant, which increases both blood pressure and heart rate. The consumption of ephedra has been directly connected to serious cardiovascular complications, that result in stroke and heart attack and sudden death. Supplements with ephedra or ephedrine-like substances should be completely avoided by people with high blood pressure.

5/8

Yohimbine

Yohimbine originates from yohimbe tree bark, and exists as a commercial product which targets both sexual pleasure enhancement and weight reduction. The nervous system stimulation from this substance leads to blood vessel constriction and elevated blood pressure. People with hypertension experience dangerous blood pressure elevations, and heart rate increases when taking yohimbine, which increases their risk for heart attacks and strokes.

6/8

Caffeine-Containing Supplements

Caffeine is found naturally within coffee, tea, and multiple energy drink formulations. Some supplements which promote weight loss and support workouts contain caffeine as an ingredient. The moderate use of caffeine remains safe for most people, yet excessive consumption will temporarily elevate blood pressure levels. People with hypertension need to be cautious about caffeine supplements, because they cause blood pressure elevations and heart rate increases that can worsen their medical condition. Patients should track their caffeine intake across all products.

7/8

Effects of high blood pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) can damage the body over time if left unmanaged. It increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure by straining blood vessels and vital organs. It can also cause vision loss, memory issues, and artery damage, leading to poor circulation and serious health complications.

8/8

Importance of blood pressure

Blood pressure is crucial for circulating blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to organs and tissues. It helps maintain proper heart and brain function. Normal blood pressure supports kidney health and prevents strain on arteries. High or low blood pressure can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, or organ damage, making its regulation essential for overall well-being.
