What is Water Bell?

Till date, we have had heard about assembly bell, recess bell and chutti bell, but at Indraprastha Vidyalaya, in Uppinangady, about 60 kilometres from Mangaluru, a special bell rings thrice a day and that is to encourage students to drink water. It's a recent trend that the school authorities have launched and named 'Water Bell Initiative’, which aims at encouraging students to drink a lot of water during the day to stay hydrated and fit. Scroll below to know more about the initiative.

2/6

Why did the water bell trend start?

According to media reports, the need for the trend came in the scene only after a recent school meeting that highlighted the health issues of school students that included urinary infection and kidney stones. During the study, it was found that students often forget to drink water during school hours and take the full water bottles back. This has resulted in a rise in headaches, dehydration and other health issues among students.

How the water bell works

According to a TOI report, the water bell rings thrice a day at 10.35 am, 12 pm and 2 pm. These alarms give a sign that kids have to drink water. While nothing has been specified about the quantity of water and duration for which kids can drink water, but it is expected that soon the school authority will define the duration of the water bell break.

Benefits of water bell

We all know about the benefits of water and the same is being taught to the kids in school, so that they understad its importance. They are also being taught about Paediatric urolithiasis and urinary tract infection, which often result due to lack of water consumption.

United Nations guideline

According to United Nations guidelines, every student (child) has the right to safe drinking water and it’s a human right too. It is important for schools to provide safe drinking water. While the guideline is quite viable and clear, in India there is no mechanism that ensures that every child drinks adequate water. It is believed that the trend of water bell will help in this direction.

Takeaway

It’s never too late for anything noble and this is surely the one. We hope that other schools pan India will get inspired by the move and implement it for the better health of the future generation. Share this article with others and create more awareness!
