Benefits of eating fruits

While we all know that fruits are an integral part of our balanced diet, do you know which fruit is good for which part of the body? Well, not many of us know and hence this piece of information is for all those people out there. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford universities, recently shared a video on Instagram and explained about four healthiest fruits and the organ they are best for. Here we have explained the same and also shared the right way of consuming these fruits to gain maximum benefits.

2/5

Blueberries

Dr Sethi suggests eating blueberries for your brain because they are rich in anthocyanins that improve memory and protect neurons. Even studies confirm that blueberries are rich in antioxidants like anthocyanins that improve memory, focus, and may slow age-related cognitive decline. According to King's College London, consumption of blueberry or blueberry powder helps improve memory, executive function, attention accuracy, and reaction times. Also, regular intake of blueberries can help lower blood pressure, reduce bad cholesterol, and improve overall cardiovascular function. They are rich in polyphenols, especially anthocyanins, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that protect the cardiovascular system.

How to consume: As per experts, they are best consumed raw, but one can also add them to oatmeal bowls, parfait jar, or simply to smoothies and shakes, or even fruit salads.

3/5

Oranges

Dr Sethi recommends eating oranges for your immunity because they are high in vitamin C and powerful citrus antioxidants. As per a study, oranges boost immunity through vitamin C and other bioactives like flavonoids. They reduce inflammation, aiding innate and acquired immunity.

How to consume: The best way is to eat them raw, one can also consume them in the form of juice or add to salads.

4/5

Apples

As per Dr Sethi's video, eating apples is good for your gut health. He explains, "Apples are rich in pectin fiber that feeds good bacteria and supports digestion." In another video, he has explained that one medium apple has 4 g of fiber plus pectin, a prebiotic that promotes healthy gut bacteria and stool regularity. As per a study, pectin helps boost Bacteroidetes while limiting harmful Firmicutes, which help improve overall gut health and gut bacteria ratio.

How to consume: While one can always eat them raw, it is also suggested to apply some peanut butter or almond butter on top and consume it as a snack or post-workout snack.

5/5

Pomegranate

In his post he has explained that eating pomegranates is good for your heart because they are loaded with polyphenols that reduce inflammation and support blood flow. It is proven that pomegranate contains polyphenols and flavonoids that help reduce oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol). It also contains compounds like punicalagin that help keep blood vessels flexible and open, improving circulation and reducing the risk of blockages. As per experts, daily intake of pomegranate may help lower systolic blood pressure, especially in people with hypertension as it relaxes blood vessel walls and reduces stress on the heart.

How to consume: The best way to consume pomegranate is to eat it raw, otherwise one can also consume it in the form of juice or add it to salads or oatmeal bowls. It also goes well on top of poha as a topping.
