Keeping Chandi Padvo, a festival falling a day after ‘Sharad Poornima’, a sweet shop in Surat had launched 'Gold Ghari'--a different version of Surati ghari or ghari, a popular sweet dish from Surat.

Traditionally, ghari is made of puri batter, milk mawa, ghee, and sugar – made into round shapes with a sweet filling. It is also available in many varieties and flavors such as pistachio, almond-Cardamom, and mawa. While the normal ghari comes at Rs 660-820 per kg, the gold ghari is priced at Rs 9,000 per kg.

According to the owners, they have launched 'gold ghari' keeping health benefits of gold in view. As per Ayurveda, gold is good for human brain, increases memory and intelligence. It is also a powerful healing remedy for strengthening the heart and improving mental and physical endurance. Gold can also be used to treat heart and lung problems, as well as epilepsy.

If food historians are to be believed, ghari was first prepared by the Devshankar Shukla for Tatya Tope and other freedom fighters to help them gain extra strength in 1857. Later, it became a food consumed at crematorium for peace of the soul of the deceased.
