Vegetables oil and its benefits

In India, cooking is incomplete without oil. Whether it’s for sautéing, deep frying, shallow frying or coating, oils are one of the most common kitchen ingredients. It is always suggested to use vegetable oil over others, because it is full of nutrients and is often locally produced. According to a report published by the Harvard University, it is suggested that one should restrict the total consumption of oils & to about 10 teaspoons/day, which includes visible fat from home cooked food and invisible fat from local and packaged food. The entire stress is on saying yes to plant-based fats in the form of vegetable oil and saying no to trans-fat that is deadly for the human body. Why vegetable oil is good for human body?

According to experts, Vanaspati has trans-fat, which has serious impact on heart health. Trans-fatty acids (TFA) are a primary cause of heart disease and strokes globally. It is derived from 2 main sources – that includes Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (Industrial TFA) and from animal sources. It has been proven that both the sources adversely affect the blood cholesterol levels and thus increase the risk of heart problems. Whereas, vegetable oil available in the market for consumption has definite health benefits as compared to oils which has trans-fats.

Rich in nutrients

It has been proven that all sorts of vegetable oils are rich in good fats and are heart-healthy. They provide the right nutrients that further optimize body's functioning at cellular level. For instance, replacing butter with mustard oil will help reduce bad cholesterol and thus minimizes the risk of heart disease and stroke. According to health experts, vegetable oils are rich in vitamins, including vitamin A & D, which are essential for enhancing overall health.

Taking the seriousness of trans-fat into consideration, FSSAI in India has launched a campaign to make consumers aware of dark side of high levels of trans-fat. The World Health Organization has fixed a target of making world TRA-free by 2022.

What you need to do?

It is important to understand what is healthy and unhealthy for your body. Read the nutritional values of oil that you purchase. Try to buy products that are healthier for your heart and avoid oils which have trans-fat. Replace products with trans-fat & high-saturated fat with vegetable oil-based foods, which have good quality fat. It is suggested to consume sunflower, mustard, groundnut/peanut, rice-bran, olive and coconut oil. Ensure that the oil you buy is cold pressed.
