Is Lemon Tea bad for health?

Tea holds utmost importance across the globe, as it is much more than just a beverage. From providing comfort to starting communications, tea can be that perfect non-alcoholic drink that gets people together. From Black Tea, Masala Tea to Herbal Tea and Green Tea, there are a variety of teas that one can have. In this article, we are talking about Lemon Tea which is prepared with lemon juice in it. It is considered to be rich in antioxidants, and many people love to consume it for weight loss. One cup of Lemon Tea might be considered good for our health, but it also can pose a threat to our life. Want to know how? Read more to find out. (Images courtesy: Canva)

Why Lemon Tea is harmful?

Lemon is considered acidic in nature and tea is naturally acidic. When two acidic ingredients are added, it increases the acidic nature of the tea. Too much acidic content can cause serious damage to our health. And an excessive amount of Lemon Tea may lead to enamel erosion, tooth sensitivity, acid reflux or heartburn and digestive discomfort. We have highlighted a few pointers that will make people aware about the side effects of drinking Lemon Tea.

The nutritionist’ take

We asked Nagpur-based Dietitian Shruti Naidu, who specialises in Lifestyle Disorders & Diabetes Management. She explained, “Lemon's oxalates may contribute to kidney stones while the caffeine content can lead to insomnia, nervousness, and rapid heart rate. The excess vitamin C present in it might hinder calcium absorption, affecting bone health. Interactions with medications and allergies are concerns. Moderation is crucial for avoiding these issues and enjoying lemon tea's benefits within a balanced diet. If health conditions exist, consulting a professional is advised before making dietary changes.”

4/8

Aggravates digestive problems

Adding lemon juice to tea increases its acid levels, which can slow down your body's digestion process. This can potentially trigger heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, and even constipation.

5/8

Risk of dehydration

The increased level of acid in the body not only affects the metabolism but also causes fluid loss. Due to this, there is an imbalance in the water level of the body, which can lead to various health problems. It is common to experience headaches and physical discomfort after drinking such excessive amounts of lemon tea.

6/8

Effect on oral health

The amount of acid present in lemon poses a risk to the enamel of your teeth. When the acidity is increased by combining tea and lemon, the erosion process is accelerated, potentially leading to tooth loss. In addition, you may also experience intense pain and sensitivity after drinking Lemon Tea.

7/8

Makes bone weaker

Lemon is known to flush out calcium through urine. When it is added to tea, it prompts the body to absorb the aluminium present in the tea, which the body cannot normally absorb. These factors can increase the acid levels in our body, which directly affects bone health.

8/8

How many cups are advised?

Shruti said, “It is best to limit your Lemon Tea intake to 1-2 cups per day. This allows you to enjoy its refreshing taste and potential benefits without overloading your system with excess acidity. But also, it's important to consider individual factors such as existing health conditions and sensitivities.” She also disclosed that the worst time to have Lemon Tea is during the evening or at night because citrus fruits, like lemons, are considered to increase Pitta dosha, which is associated with heat and digestion. Consuming Lemon Tea at these times could disrupt the body's natural balance and impact sleep quality.
