What makes this one-pot meal a star dish

When it comes to Indian festivals, elaborate cooking and aromatic dishes are a part of every celebration. While many households prepare many dishes at home, one dish is often ordered online for guests and family too: Biryani. If you don't agree, Swiggy's monthly report, from the online food delivery platform will surely convince you. According to their statistics for March 2026, Biryani was the undisputed star of the Eid al-Fitr festivities (March 21, 2026), with an average of over 200 orders placed every minute across the country. Alongside this savory centerpiece, indulgent desserts like Choco Lava Cake and Gulab Jamun were in high demand, with an average of 11 Gulab Jamun orders placed per minute across India. One customer from Noida placed the highest order across India worth INR 38,165. In another interesting insight, a customer in Mumbai ordered 3 large packs of Mutton Biryani for INR 15,866, enough to serve 15 people. The question is: What makes it one of the most comforting dishes? Scroll down to find out.

2/6

Comfort of flavours

When it comes to any dish, people get addicted to it when the flavour profile is comforting and relatable. In the context of biryani, everything sounds and tastes like a hug of comfort. From the use of ingredients like basmati rice, meat, whole spices, curd, saffron water, kewra water, brown onion, and more, nothing feels alien to the human palate. This is one reason people feel confident ordering it, with little chance that someone might not like it.

3/6

Connects people

From kids to adults, it is loved by everyone and helps connect people. Think of a cocktail night at a friend's home, where everyone is slightly full after munching and drinks and is about to place an order for dinner. People often end up ordering biryani because it is a complete meal in itself. People with similar tastes consider it the right option, where everyone can share a few bites and be satisfied.

4/6

Easy to consume

Thanks to market players, biryanis are now delivered in handis, casseroles, and even aluminum foil baskets, making it easy to just eat without needing extra crockery. Simply open the dough seal, mix with a spoon and you are ready to indulge. While dishes like dal chawal or naan sabzi need proper plating to be enjoyed, many dishes also require reheating.

5/6

Regional diversity

Whether you are in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Bengaluru, every region has its own variety of biryani, making it easy for people to adapt to the taste. All varieties are now available via different brands. So, if you are Bengali and craving Bengali-style Anda Biryani, you can easily order it in Delhi or Mumbai. If you are a fan of Lucknowi or Hyderabadi biryani, you can enjoy that too in cities like Delhi and Mumbai. All you need to do is select the right vendor and your tummy will thank you later.

6/6

Availability in veg and non-veg

While the debate about whether vegetarian biryani exists is endless, the fact is that the market is full of veg variation. From kathal to paneer and mushroom to falafel, the players are selling biryani in all forms. A market exists for every variety and that is what matters to the players.
