How to control consitpation during winters

Even though it sounds gross, it is important for you to be aware of the frequency, color, and consistency of your poop, every day. It is an indicator of your current state of health. It is important to understand though that while most individuals pass stools on average three to four times a week, those with a regular pattern pass stools at fixed times of the day and at the same number of times each day. How many times a week do you poop? Is it less than 3 times a week? It is possible that you may be suffering from constipation. (Image: istock)

Things you need to know about constipation

Did you know? Globally, about 10% to 2 0% of adults suffer from constipation at some point in their lives.

Constipation that persists for a long period of time is a red flag. If your colon doesn't eliminate all the toxic waste that it is supposed to, it leaves you susceptible to a wide variety of lifestyle and health conditions such as poor skin, hemorrhoids, fissures, inability to lose weight, and even food intolerance in extreme cases.

The disease affects 26% of women and 16% of men who are 65 years of age and older. These numbers spike to 34% women and 26% men among those 84 years and above.

Constipation can be caused by a number of factors which may include a sedentary lifestyle, a diet low in fiber, drinking excessive amounts of tea or coffee, dehydration, taking too many antacids, iron supplements, and calcium supplements, a poorly managed stress response, and insomnia or sleep problems. Constipation and winters

During the winter, however, when specifically, water consumption is less, you may experience digestive issues and constipation. Without proper treatment, constipation can lead to a number of underlying health problems as well.

One most important tips for life is water and fibre. Consuming foods high in fibre, such as whole grains, fruits, and seasonal vegetables like oranges, guavas, grapefruit, oats, etc, during the winter months is an effective way to prevent constipation. A fiber-rich diet contributes to the bulk of your stool and acts as a natural broom for sweeping the colon. Increase your water intake when you increase your fiber intake to avoid constipation. A liter of water every morning is a natural and effective remedy for constipation.

Apart from eating fibre-rich foods and drinking sufficient water, here are a few home remedies that can help ease constipation. (Image: istock)

Home remedies to soothe constipation

Constipation should be considered a priority. If left untreated, constipation can cause a magnet to your intestines and rectum. It may cause dehydration, block your bowels, and slow your body's ability to absorb medicine. (Image: istock)

5/10

Psyllium husk

Psyllium husk, also known as isabgol, is a dietary fiber that promotes weight loss while acting as a natural laxative. A glass of water containing 2 to 3 teaspoons of psyllium husk or isabgol is the best home remedy for constipation. (Image: istock)

6/10

Triphala

The use of Triphala effectively eliminates excess Vata, Pitta, and Kapha from the body, restoring the body to a state of balance. Mix 1 tablespoon of Triphala powder with water before going to bed to help cleanse your colon the next morning. (Image: istock)

Black raisins or prunes

It is believed that black raisins or prunes contain insoluble fibre, which contributes to the bulkiness of the stools and helps the bowels function normally. Before going to bed, eat four to five soaked prunes, or two tbsp of black raisins with warm water. (Image: istock)

8/10

Ajwain/bishop’s weed

This spice promotes the production of gastric juice, which aids digestion and permits food to be broken down in the stomach. It is recommended that you soak 1/2 tsp of bishop's weed or ajwain in hot water and drink it. (Image: istock)

9/10

Castor oil

Castor oil has been proven to be an effective laxative in the treatment of constipation. Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, which facilitates the elimination of fecal waste. A tbsp of castor oil before bed can ease the passage. However, pregnant women and women who are menstruating should avoid it. (Image: istock)

10/10

Virgin coconut oil

Evidence suggests that the oil contains medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which are believed to stimulate bowel movements and soften stools. A number of health benefits are associated with medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which contain medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). It is recommended that you consume one tbsp of virgin coconut oil before going to bed in order to lubricate your passage.

Along with these foods, I believe that the most critical thing is to ensure that you buy only those products that are ethically sourced, honest, of premium quality, and chemical-free, so that nothing gets in the way of your health goals.

It is thus possible to not only prevent a disease, but also manage and heal it more effectively. (Image: istock)
