Who is P. Rajagopal?

P.Rajagpal is the founder of Saravana Bhavan and is also known as the ‘Dosa King’. The 71-year old businessman started his journey in 1981 with a grocery shop in Chennai and later took the brave step of opening his first restaurant at a time when eating out was unusual for most Indians and named it ‘Sarvana Bhavan’. His story of rags to riches as a visionary is unique, but the twist in his story happened in the early 2000s when he was involved in a murder case, after some fateful cosmic advice. According to the latest report, this son of onion trader from a village in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu is meant to surrender by July 7. Here’s everything you need to know about him.

USP of Saravana Bhavan

When it comes to South Indian food, the first name that comes in mind is ‘Saravana Bhavan’. From traditional thali to a wide range of dosas, the place offers everything from the South Indian cuisine that can make you crave for more. Sarvana Bhavan became a success and within no time spread beyond India, with around 80 outlets abroad today catering foreigners and the Indian diaspora in the United States, the Gulf, Europe and Australia. According to the staffs, Rajagopal is a generous boss who always cared for his employees and gave them benefits like health insurance. In return, they adoringly call him ‘annachi’ (elder brother).

What actually happened?

According to media reports, Rajagopal was obsessed with women and in the early 2000s, Rajagopal reportedly took an astrologer’s advice to make a fateful decision -- to take as his third wife the daughter of an employee he had fallen for. The young woman was already married and rejected his advances. If reports are to be believed Rajagopal is not a man used to taking no for an answer. Her rejection hampered Rajagopal’s ego and in 2001, her husband was murdered on Rajagopal’s orders. In 2004, he was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years of jail. According to the latest update, he is meant to surrender by July 7 and spend the rest of his life behind the bars.

Verdict

Rajagopal’s story of passion and hard work is truly inspiring. On the other side of the spectrum, it was his weakness for women and overconfidence that led him to the path of crime caused his downfall.
