Almonds are one of the healthiest nuts, often considered as a powerhouse of nutrition. From soups, salads, to bhel we often roast them and add to daily meals. According to Sadhguru, the right way to eat almonds is to soak them overnight, peel, and then consume. In a video on Instagram, he has explained the logic behind the practice. According to Sadhguru, these kinds of nuts have their own mechanism of self-defense. The moment you soak them in water, the seeds believe that it is going to be planted to sprout and become a big tree. So, when you sprout, they have some carcinogenic chemical within them, it comes to the surface just beneath the skin, so that insects will not eat them up. So as you soak them, and then peel them off, the carcinogenic chemical is gone along with the peel.

Benefits of almonds with peel

It is said that brown skin contains potent antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids that help fight oxidative stress and inflammation. Also, the peel contributes to the overall fiber content of the nut that aids gut health. According to a study, it is said that soaking does not improve gastrointestinal tolerance or acceptance as claimed in the lay literature. They are high in monounsaturated fats and magnesium, which help lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and supports in maintaining healthy blood pressure.

It is said that soaking the almonds and removing the skin soften the texture, making them easier to chew and digest. Also, soaking may help reduce anti-nutrients like phytic acid, improving the bioavailability of minerals. Soaked and peeled almonds are easy on the gut, which aids digestion.

4 ways to consume almonds

Eat them plain: One can simply soak 4-5 almonds overnight and then remove the peel and consume on an empty stomach.
Add to smoothie: Soaked almonds can be blended into smoothies along with milk and other fruits. They add healthy fats, fiber, and a mild nutty flavor.
Make almond paste: If you don't want to chew them, blend into a paste and mix with milk along with saffron and enjoy as badam drink.
Use in salad or soup: One can simply saute and add them to soups or salads for extra crunch and nutrition.
