National Fresh Breath Day: 7 popular foods to avoid that cause bad breath

Ask anyone what’s an immediate turn-off in a person right next to you (or across you), and most of them will come up with one of these two options: bad breath and body odor!

That’s why, every year, National Fresh Breath Day is celebrated on August 6, a day to appreciate that clean, minty-fresh feeling and remind ourselves of the power of good oral hygiene. Whether you’re prepping for a job interview or a first date, your breath says more about you than you think. But bad breath isn't just a social oops, it can be a sign of poor dental health or dietary choices.

While brushing and flossing are crucial, what we eat also plays a big role in how our breath smells. Some common, everyday foods can leave behind stubborn odors that not even a pack of gum can fix. So on this fun (and informative) day, let’s take a closer (and sniffier) look at the foods that are best to avoid if you want to keep your breath kiss-ready.

2/9

Garlic

Let’s start with the big one. It’s everyone’s favourite menace, garlic!

Why it stinks: Garlic contains allyl methyl sulfide, a sulfur compound your body absorbs into the bloodstream and releases not only through your mouth, but also your lungs. That means even brushing your teeth won’t fully remove the smell, because your lungs are literally exhaling it from within! That means garlic breath can stick around for hours, even if you brush!

Quick fix: Try eating parsley, lime wedges, or drinking green tea to neutralize the smell.

3/9

Onions

The next one comes from the same kitchen space garlic does: it’s onions!

Why it stinks: Like garlic, onions are rich in volatile sulfur compounds. Onions, too, hit you both ways: first in the mouth, then in the bloodstream. They can cause a double whammy, smell from the mouth and from the lungs.

Quick fix: Chew on raw herbs like mint or chew sugar-free gum after eating.

4/9

Coffee

Sorry to break it to you, but your round-the-clock bestie does leave you with bad breath!

Why it stinks: Your morning ritual might smell cozy, but coffee causes dry mouth and acidity, both of which feed odor-causing bacteria. Plus, coffee itself has strong-smelling compounds that linger.

Quick fix: Drink water with or after your coffee and keep a mini mouthwash handy.

5/9

Alcohol

Think you can escape a slightly dicey taste left in your mouth after you've had a couple of drinks? Think again!

Why it stinks: Like coffee, Alcohol also dries out the mouth and reduces saliva production, giving bacteria a green light to multiply. Some alcohols also contain sugar, which fuels bad-breath bacteria. Red wine, in particular, can stain your tongue and teeth.

Quick fix: Rinse your mouth with water and brush gently after drinking.

6/9

Cheese (and dairy products)

This one’s a shocker!

Why it stinks: Dairy may not scream "stinky" when eaten, but milk-based proteins break down into sulfurous byproducts, especially in aged cheeses like brie or blue. Bacteria love to feed on milk proteins, especially if lactose isn't digested well. That interaction leads to sour or rotten smells.

Quick fix: Pair with fibrous foods like apples or celery to help cleanse your palate. Rinse with water and scrape your tongue to remove dairy residue.

7/9

Fish (especially canned Tuna)

Although fish, especially Tuna, is an excellent source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and B vitamins, and hence a nutritious food option, it comes with this stinky downside as well.

Why it stinks: Tuna, sardines, and anchovies are high in trimethylamine, a compound that can linger on the breath long after lunch. Especially, Tuna contains amines, which release a fishy smell when exposed to air. The odor can cling to your teeth and tongue for hours.

Quick fix: Use lemon or vinegar to reduce the fishy smell before cooking or eating.

8/9

Spicy foods and sugary treats

Surprise! It’s not the spicy or sweet smell you think.

Why it stinks: Spicy dishes can trigger your body to sweat, including your salivary glands. This sweat may carry spicy or strong-smelling compounds that amplify odors. On the other hand, sugar feeds bacteria that produce acids and foul-smelling gases.

Quick fix: Follow your spicy delicacies up with fibrous fruits like apples or pears to cleanse the palate. Opt for sugar-free gum and limit sticky candy.

Quick tips for fresh breath every day

Even if you love garlic naan or can’t give up your double espresso, you can still keep your breath fresh with smart habits. Brush your tongue (bacteria love to hang out there!) and floss daily to remove hidden food particles. Snack on crunchy fruits and veggies like apples and carrots. Drink lots of water, lots of it, because hydration really is everything. Use a mouthwash with antibacterial properties, and quit smoking; it’s one of the worst breath offenders. And finally, visit your dentist twice a year (no skipping there).
