Is it safe to eat eggs in the summer season?

Loved for their taste, texture, health quotient and versatility, eggs are a staple across the world and are extensively consumed for all their unique health benefits. For ages, we have been told about the numerous health benefits of adding eggs to the daily diet, but there are several myths that revolve around this age-old belief. One such common belief is that eggs must be avoided during summers due to their warm potency and high protein content, but is it actually true? Read on to find out more about it…

Is it actually unsafe to consume eggs in summer?

Eggs are naturally loaded with amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, but the question arises: is it actually safe to eat eggs during summers? Well, it is traditionally believed that eggs generate heat in the body, making them unsuitable for hot weather. However, according to health experts, it is believed that despite the warm potency of eggs and hot weather, eggs can be consumed safely all around the year. It is also advised that eggs must be consumed in moderation to keep the cholesterol levels under control.

Eggs and body heat

It is a common belief that eggs may lead to an increase in body heat, which may add to the risk of dehydration, diarrhea and other digestive issues induced by body heat.

According to a report published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, eggs are a complete source of protein and contain essential nutrients like vitamin D, B12, and choline. The idea that eggs cause excessive body heat is

isn't about internal body heat, but majorly about food safety. This is because higher temperatures can increase the risk of bacterial growth, especially Salmonella, which can contaminate eggs if not stored properly. A study published in the journal Poultry Science emphasizes the importance of refrigeration. Eggs should be stored below 40°F (4°C) and consumed within 3–5 weeks for safety.

Health benefits of eggs

There’s no denying that eggs are filling, support muscle maintenance, and help with skin and eye health due to antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin. A 2020 review in the journal Nutrients confirmed that eggs do not increase the risk of heart disease in healthy people and can be part of a balanced summer diet. However, to enjoy eggs in a healthy way, avoid heavy or greasy preparations. Instead, try boiled eggs in salads, egg sandwiches with cucumber and mint, or cold egg wraps with yogurt-based sauces. These light dishes reduce the feeling of heat and keep digestion easy. Omelets with vegetables and herbs like coriander, mint, and spinach are also summer-friendly.
