#InternationalHummusDay: Fresh ways to use hummus in your everyday meals
Once seen as just a party dip or mezze staple, hummus is stepping confidently into the spotlight as an everyday kitchen essential. Creamy, nutty, and protein-packed, this Middle Eastern spread - made primarily from chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic - is not only vegan and gluten-free, but also endlessly adaptable. It lends itself beautifully to a range of meals, from breakfast to dinner, with minimal effort and maximum flavour.
“Homemade hummus stays fresh for up to five days in the fridge if stored in an airtight container. To keep it extra creamy and fresh, drizzle a thin layer of olive oil on top before sealing,” says Chef Rhea Malhotra.
Chef Arjun Bhatia adds, “Hummus can add depth and character to a variety of dishes. Used as a sandwich spread, a pasta enhancer, or even as a salad dressing base, it brings both flavour and nourishment in a simple spoonful.”
On toast, with a twist
Move over avocado - hummus is here to jazz up your morning toast. A generous slather on a slice of crusty sourdough makes for a satisfying and wholesome base. Top it with sautéed mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, or even a runny fried egg for a savoury kick. For a refreshing bite, layer it with cucumber ribbons and a sprinkle of za’atar or chilli flakes.
A creamy vegan pasta sauce
Who knew that hummus could moonlight as a pasta sauce? Stirred into hot penne with a splash of pasta water and a glug of olive oil, hummus transforms into a luscious, creamy sauce - no dairy needed. Add some roasted vegetables, fresh basil, or a squeeze of lemon juice to round it out. It’s the ultimate weeknight dinner hack: fast, filling, and fuss-free.
Grain bowls that pack a punch
The modern grain bowl is all about balance and flavour — and a dollop of hummus brings both. Nestled atop quinoa, millets, or brown rice, it adds richness and depth. Pair it with grilled veggies, spiced chickpeas, or pickled onions for a lunch that’s as photogenic as it is nutritious.
Tortillas with a Mediterranean touch
Give your wraps a contemporary twist by swapping out traditional chutneys or sauces with hummus. Spread a layer of hummus on your tortilla before adding spiced potato or paneer filling. The hummus not only adds creaminess but also helps hold everything together, balancing out the spices while bringing a rich, smooth texture.
A savoury parfait, anyone?
Here’s a fresh idea for your next brunch table or packed lunch: a savoury parfait jar. Layer hummus with cooked lentils, grated beetroot, herbed yoghurt, and crunchy seeds in a glass jar for a dish that’s as delightful to look at as it is to eat. It's a make-ahead option that travels well and satisfies your hunger in layers.
