Simple recipe for ginger candy to fight seasonal flu

As the seasons turn, so do the usual troubles: coughs, colds, and sore throats that linger longer than they should. Pharmacies may offer shelves of syrups and lozenges, but many homes still turn to ginger – a root trusted for centuries for its warmth and healing bite. The simplest way to put it to use is in the form of ginger candy, where raw spice softens into a soothing chew you can slip into your pocket. It is both cure and comfort, rolled into one. Scroll down to learn how to make it at home.

Why ginger helps

Ginger’s place in traditional medicine has never wavered. It calms inflammation, eases nausea, and clears stubborn congestion. Its natural heat soothes sore throats, while antibacterial qualities fight off infection. During seasonal change, when immunity dips and flu spreads quickly, ginger becomes a reliable first defence. Turned into candy, it feels practical too – something you can reach for the moment a scratch builds in your throat or the evening chill sets in.

3/5

Ingredients

This recipe keeps things simple, built on ingredients you probably already have at home. All it takes is a cup of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced thin, half a cup of honey. A teaspoon of lemon juice adds a touch of brightness if you like, and just a pinch of salt helps bring it all together.

4/5

Method

Set the ginger slices in a saucepan with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for 30–40 minutes, until the ginger turns tender. Drain, keeping aside half a cup of the liquid. Return the ginger to the pan with honey and the reserved liquid. Stir gently over medium heat until the honey thickens into a syrup and coats the slices. Keep cooking until it reduces and the pieces pull apart. Spread them on parchment, dust lightly with sugar or salt, and leave them to cool. Once dry, store in a jar, where they will keep for weeks.

5/5

More than a remedy

What makes ginger candy appealing is that it goes beyond medicine. It soothes during flu season, yes, but also helps with travel sickness, indigestion, or serves simply as a natural sweet. Unlike packaged lozenges, there are no additives or artificial colors here, only ginger’s fire, tempered by honey. For those who find raw ginger too harsh, the candy form takes the edge off without losing its strength.
