How to keep lemons fresh for a long time

Winters are here and it's time to make the most of citrus fruits like lemons, oranges and lime, but keeping them fresh and juicy for a long time may seem like a challenge. This is because citrus fruits like lemons tend to dry up and develop molds, which can lead to faster rotting. Well, here are some simple tips to store lemons that will help you retain their freshness for a long time.

2/7

Refrigeration

Store lemons in the refrigerator to slow down the dehydration process and extend their shelf life. Place them in the vegetable crisper drawer or in a plastic bag to maintain moisture.

3/7

Avoid moisture

Make sure the lemons are completely dry before placing them in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can lead to mold growth.

4/7

Avoid direct sunlight

Store lemons away from direct sunlight. Excessive sunlight exposure can speed up the drying process and may cause the lemons to spoil.

5/7

Ethylene producing fruits

Wrap each lemon individually in plastic wrap before refrigerating. This helps to maintain moisture and prevents the lemons from drying out.

Another important reason why you should wrap lemons separately is to keep them away from ethylene-producing fruits like apples, bananas, and avocados. Ethylene can accelerate the ripening and deterioration of lemons.

6/7

Use a plastic bag or container

Place lemons in a plastic bag or airtight container before storing them in the refrigerator. This helps retain moisture and prevents the lemons from absorbing odors from the fridge.

7/7

Store whole lemons

Keep lemons whole until you are ready to use them. Sliced, cut or juiced lemons tend to dry out more quickly.
