Tips to check ghee purity at home

Ghee, a clarified form of butter, holds a special place in our hearts and our recipes. This liquid gold is far more than a culinary ingredient and holds immense significance in Indian cuisine. Its rich, nutty flavour enhances the taste of traditional dishes, lending a unique aroma and texture. Beyond its culinary uses, ghee is celebrated for its medicinal properties in Ayurveda and is believed to improve digestion, strengthen the immune system, and nourish the body and mind. In our culture, ghee is often considered a symbol of purity and this is why, we use it in rituals, religious ceremonies, and festive occasions. However, with the market flooded with various brands, ensuring the purity of your ghee is essential. This is why, we have got some tests for you which can help determine the quality and the purity of ghee at home. (Images courtesy: Canva)

Ghee nutrition

Ghee is a rich source of healthy fats, including saturated fats and cholesterol. It is high in fat-soluble vitamins like A, E, and D, which are essential for skin health, vision, and immune function. It is also lactose-free and offers a concentrated dose of energy, making it a preferred choice for cooking in Indian cuisine. Additionally, it contains antioxidants, aids in digestion, and supports overall gut health. However, moderation is key due to its high-calorie content, and it's best consumed as part of a balanced diet.

3/10

Check the aroma

Pure ghee has a distinct, nutty aroma that intensifies when heated. Artificial or impure ghee often lacks this characteristic fragrance. When heating the ghee, a genuine product will fill your kitchen with a pleasant, rich scent.

4/10

Observe the colour

Pure cow ghee is typically light golden yellow in colour. It should not have any artificial colouring agents. Be cautious, if the ghee appears unusually bright or lacks a natural hue, as this may indicate impurities.

5/10

Texture and consistency

Ghee should have a smooth, creamy texture when at room temperature. It solidifies slightly when refrigerated but melts easily when heated. If the texture is sticky, it may be adulterated.

6/10

Clarity and impurities

Pure ghee is clear and free from impurities. To check for clarity, heat a small quantity in a pan. Impurities, if present, will settle at the bottom. Genuine ghee will remain clear without any sediments or residue.

7/10

The burn test

Performing a burn test can reveal the authenticity of ghee. Place a teaspoon of ghee on a heated pan. Pure ghee will melt quickly and leave no residue. Impure ghee may sizzle, emit a foul smell, or leave behind impurities and residue.

8/10

Refrigeration test

Pure ghee solidifies when refrigerated but softens at room temperature. If your ghee remains liquid even in the refrigerator, it might contain oils or fats other than those found in genuine ghee.

9/10

Source and brand reputation

Purchase ghee from reputable sources or trusted brands with a history of producing authentic, high-quality products. Also, check for certifications while buying the ghee as that can provide additional assurance.

10/10

Uses of ghee

Ghee has a high smoke point which makes it ideal for frying and sauteing, and adds a rich & nutty flavour to dishes. From adding taste into sweets to seasoning and drizzling over rice, lentils, or vegetables, ghee helps in elevating the overall culinary experience. Not just kitchen, but ghee finds application in Ayurvedic medicine, where it's used in massages and herbal preparations for its therapeutic properties.
