Traditional bhogs for Ganesh Chaturthi

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is around the corner. This year, the festival will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 27, during the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of the Bhadrapada month, as per the Hindu lunar calendar. The festival typically spans 10 to 11 days, concluding with the grand Ganesh Visarjan on Saturday, September 6. The festival is incomplete without the favourite foods of Lord Ganesha which are offered as bhog to the deity. Take a look at the 9 traditional bhogs that are offered to Lord Ganesha during the festival.

Modak


It is one of the most popular bhogs offered to Lord Ganesha. The traditional modak is called Ukadiche Modak, which is a sweet steamed dumpling made of rice flour and stuffed with coconut, jaggery and dry fruits.

Puran Poli




Another popular delicacy prepared for Lord Ganesha's bhog is Puran Poli, which is a flatbread made of all-purpose flour or maida. It is also stuffed with a sweet filling of cooked chana dal flavoured with jaggery.

Motichoor Laddoo




Motichoor Laddoo is a popular offering made to Lord Ganesha and is made using gram flour or besan, semolina, saffron/edible colour, sugar syrup and ghee/oil. It’s a melt-in-the-mouth bhog and is super-easy to make.

Coconut Laddoo




Coconut Laddoo is also a famous bhog offered to Lord Ganesha and is made with desiccated coconut, khoya, cardamom powder, ghee and powdered sugar.

Shrikhand



This sweet delight is made using hung curd sweetened with sugar or jaggery and saffron. It is popular in both Gujarati and Maharashtrian cuisine and is offered to Lord Ganesha along with other sweets.

Patholi


Patholi is a steamed delight and is made with rice flour, with a filling made of jaggery and fresh coconut. The uniqueness of this dish is that these rolls are steamed using fresh turmeric leaves.

Coconut Barfi


As the name suggests, it is a barfi made with coconut and is offered as Bhog to Lord Ganesha. To make this sweet, you need desiccated coconut, condensed milk, green cardamom, rose water, ghee, sugar, and full cream milk.

This is one of the simplest bhogs offered to Lord Ganesha and is made with roasted gram flour, sugar syrup, edible colour and cardamom powder.

It’s a sweet deep-fried dish offered to Lord Ganesha and is similar to Gujiya. It is made with all-purpose flour and the stuffing is made of desiccated coconut, sooji, sugar and dry fruits.
