There are other foods that can simply disrupt the sleep cycle, cause discomfort, and cause indigestion or even lead to long-term physical as well as mental health issues. Caffeine is a common stimulant that can disrupt your sleep as it works by blocking adenosine, a chemical in your brain that promotes sleepiness, and stimulates the production of cortisol, the stress hormone, making you feel more alert and awake. While the effects of caffeine can vary from person to person, consuming it close to bedtime is almost always a bad idea. Some of the common foods and drinks that contain caffeine are coffee, tea, desserts, energy drinks, and even certain chocolates. Caffeine stays in the body for at least 3 to 5 hours. In fact, according to health experts, drinking coffee or eating chocolate late in the evening can make it difficult for your body to subside its ill effects.

Spicy foods are undeniably delicious, but they can also be troublesome when consumed around bedtime. This is due to the presence of capsaicin, the compound responsible for the heat in spicy foods. Consuming spicy foods before bedtime can increase the body temperature and may lead to digestive issues, which eventually ends up leading to sleeplessness. Another reason why eating spicy foods before bed is a strict no-no is because it can trigger heartburn, acid reflux, or indigestion, making it uncomfortable to sleep.

If you love gorging on citrus fruits before bedtime, then it may be the reason for metabolic issues. This is because citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, but they can be harsh on your stomach if eaten before bedtime. The high acidity of citrus fruits can trigger acid reflux, heartburn, or an upset stomach, especially when lying down after eating.This happens because these tangy and tart fruits are acidic in nature and can increase stomach acid production. So, when you lie down to sleep, the acid can flow back into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation or discomfort. This can interfere with your sleep cycle.

Fried foods and heavy, greasy meals are hard to digest and can lead to discomfort if consumed before bedtime. High-fat foods slow down your digestion, making it more difficult for your stomach to process food during the night.
