Cyber threat amidst pandemic
As the toughest pandemic scare affects the world, the digital world has been buzzing with activity and so has been the cyber attacks. The second phase of the million dollar online whiskey auction has been postponed after being a target of a cyber attack.
The million dollar online auction of the world's most exquisite scotch and whiskey, was affected after a threat of cyber attack.
The prized possession
The luxurious collection was named as "the Perfect Collection" and was amassed by the late Richard Gooding, a private American collector from Colorado.
Gooding's luxurious selection had more than 3,900 bottles -- primarily single malt Scotch. In fact, some of these individually valued at more than £1.2 million ($1.4 million), according to the auctioneers.
A man with a taste of fine things, Gooding spent decades in his quest for the ‘perfect collection.’ He travelled and explored Scotland to find the most special bottles at auctions and distilleries, according to the auction house. What’s more, his special collection had valuable and rare whiskeys from The Macallan, Bowmore and Springbank, as well as drinks from now-closed distilleries, Stromness Distillery and Dallas Dhu.
The expensive affair
The first phase of the collection, made up for more than 1,900 bottles, sold for about £3.2 million ($3.9 million) earlier this year.
As per the auctioneers, the second phase was expected to fetch more, with more than 1,900 bottles and featuring the exquisite - The Macallan 1926 Fine & Rare 60 Year Old, which the Perth-based auctioneer added that he was expecting to fetch more than £1 million at auction ($1.2 million) -- went live on April 10.
However, the bidding was to be closed on April 20, but had to be postponed for two days as there were "abnormal excessive loads on the website, which caused some technical issues," as per a CNN report.
The cyber attack target
As per the auctioneers, "On 21 April, WhiskyAuctioneer.com experienced a targeted, technologically sophisticated, sustained and malicious attack on our website and databases," the auctioneer said in a statement on its website, adding that part two of the Perfect Collection auction had been postponed "indefinitely."
“They further extended their apologies to the postponement of the auction."The team here is working extremely hard to investigate this and minimize the impacts on our valued customers as a result of this situation," they added.
As per the report by CNN, The Scotland Police reported a cyber incident from a business in Perth, Scotland and the investigations were in process.
