Everyday swaps to make your kitchen more microplastic-safe

You may not see them, but microplastics could be floating in your food, water, and even the air around your kitchen. From plastic containers to non-stick pans, many everyday items slowly break down and leave behind tiny particles that can find their way into what you eat. But don’t panic. Switch plastic jars for glass or steel

One of the simplest changes is moving your dry goods like rice, spices, lentils, and snacks into glass or stainless steel containers. Plastic jars may leach microplastics over time, especially in heat or moisture. Glass is non-reactive and easy to clean, and steel is sturdy and safe. Both options last longer and keep your food fresher.

Ditch plastic chopping boards

Those colourful plastic chopping boards may be convenient, but every cut leaves behind tiny plastic shavings. Switch to wooden or bamboo boards, which are gentler on your knives and won’t shed particles into your food. They also look beautiful and age well if cared for properly.

Rethink non-stick cookware

Traditional non-stick pans can wear down with use and heat, releasing microplastics and harmful chemicals. Try cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic-coated pans instead. They might take a little extra care, but they offer clean cooking without chemical coatings. Once seasoned right, they’re just as easy to use.

Avoid microwaving in plastic

Heating food in plastic containers is one of the fastest ways to invite microplastics into your meals. Even “microwave-safe” plastics can degrade over time. Shift to reheating in glass or ceramic bowls. They don’t leach anything and help your food taste better too.

Replace single-use with reusable

You don’t have to pick only one. Wheat and jowar can both be good, based on your mood, meals, and health needs. If you’re new to jowar, start with one roti a day and see how your body feels. Both grains, when made fresh and eaten with seasonal veggies or a little ghee, can boost energy, aid digestion, and keep your system balanced. It’s your meal, so choose what feels right for you.
