Essential foods to keep you cool all summer long

With the summer heat rising, walking outside in temperatures above 40 degrees of heat feels like being thrown into an oven. While fans and air conditioning can provide some temporary comfort, the best way to combat extreme heat is by hydrating your body from the inside out. It's important to change your diet to include lighter, hydrating foods so that you have sustained energy levels and don't get tired during a heatwave. Choosing foods that have natural thermal-regulating properties will help you feel better and avoid common symptoms of dehydration. Here are some amazing cooling foods you should include in your diet this summer to help you naturally keep cool and balanced even on the hottest days. Prioritize crisp cucumbers, juicy watermelon, and refreshing mint to effectively replenish fluids and maintain internal equilibrium.

Mint (Pudina)

Mint is much more than just an herb for garnishing food. It contains menthol, which naturally cools the body, and has other qualities that make it soothing and calming to the stomach. So, when added to drinks or chutneys, mint will improve heat tolerance.

Buttermilk (Chaas)

Buttermilk is a classic summertime essential that is extremely affordable. Not only does buttermilk cool you off with its awesome and refreshing taste, but it also contains plenty of healthy probiotics that promote healthy digestion and keep your intestines happy during hot summer days when digestion may be compromised due to extreme heat. If you would like to give buttermilk even more of a cooling effect, consider adding a pinch of cumin or black salt.

Watermelon

Watermelon is one of the quintessential summertime foods, and has one of the highest water contents of any fruit, making it a key part of your hydration supply and one of the best foods to prevent dehydration from hot weather. Watermelon is also an excellent source of vitamins and is full of antioxidants that help keep your body’s internal temperature under control.

Strawberry

The summer is a great time to eat strawberries because of their high water content, which keeps you hydrated when you are hot. Strawberries are a great source of Vitamin C and antioxidants, which can help reduce the effects of oxidative stress caused by heat exposure and help keep you feeling energised and cool.

Cucumber

Cucumbers are another summertime food that tends to be overlooked; however, due to the fact that cucumbers are mostly made up of water and have very few calories (less than 15 calories per cucumber), they offer a lot of hydration with very little digestion. Cucumbers also have a natural cooling property, along with plenty of fibre, to keep you cool on those hot summer days.

7/10

Coconut water

Coconut water is nature’s ideal substitute for sugary sodas. With plenty of important electrolytes (potassium and magnesium) that your body quickly loses through sweat, drinking coconut water will replace your lost electrolytes and help you avoid fatigue and muscle cramping. In addition to being refreshing, coconut water is an instant way to cool down.

Peaches

This hydrating, cooling fruit is packed with vitamins and fibre. They help balance internal body heat and soothe irritation caused by summer temperatures, making them a perfect, nutritious snack to combat oxidative stress and maintain digestive health.

9/10

Lemon Water

An excellent way to stay hydrated and energised, lemon water replenishes electrolytes lost through sweat. It aids digestion, helps flush out toxins, and provides a Vitamin C boost, keeping you refreshed and balanced on hot days.

Apples

A nutrient-dense, accessible fruit that provides steady, sustained energy without crashing. Their fibre and water content support digestion and hydration, while their antioxidants promote overall well-being, helping you stay active and comfortable during the summer heat.
