Can drinking black tea in the morning cause acidity?

Can drinking black tea in the morning cause acidity?

Beginning the day with a hot cup of tea is a ritual in most Indian households, and in every region there’s a unique tea culture that reflects on the local taste and preferences. One such tea culture from the east is Bengal’s tradition of starting the day with black tea, but is it actually good for metabolic health?

2/4

Is black tea good or bad?

Black tea is loved for its strong flavor, rich antioxidants, and energy-boosting properties, drinking it on an empty stomach can sometimes lead to discomfort. One of the most common concerns is whether black tea can cause acidity when consumed without food. Black tea contains natural compounds called tannins, which are responsible for its slightly bitter taste. These tannins can increase the production of stomach acid. When taken on an empty stomach, this excess acid may irritate the lining of the stomach, leading to acidity, heartburn, or even nausea in some individuals. People with sensitive digestion are more likely to experience this effect.

3/4

Another factor is caffeine

Black tea has a moderate amount of caffeine, which can stimulate the production of gastric acid. While this can aid in digestion when food is present, without food, the acid may accumulate and cause a burning sensation in the chest or upper abdomen. Regularly starting your day with black tea before breakfast may, therefore, increase the chances of acidity over time. The temperature of the tea also plays a role. Very hot black tea consumed on an empty stomach may irritate the stomach lining further. In contrast, having tea with milk, honey, or after eating something light, like fruit or toast, can reduce the acidic impact and make it gentler on the stomach. It is also important to remember that not everyone reacts the same way. Some people may drink black tea on an empty stomach without any issues, while others may immediately feel acidic symptoms. Factors such as pre-existing acidity, stress levels, and overall diet play a major role in how one’s body responds to black tea. Moderation and self-awareness are key.

What study says

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology published in the National Library of Medicine found that tannin-rich beverages, such as black tea, could increase gastric acid secretion and potentially worsen symptoms of acid reflux in sensitive individuals. The researchers noted that participants who consumed black tea on an empty stomach were more likely to report discomfort compared to those who drank it after a meal. This suggests that timing and individual tolerance are crucial in determining whether black tea leads to acidity.
