Can honey help in seasonal allergies?

Honey has long been celebrated for its numerous health benefits, and its antihistamine properties are no exception. Packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, honey has been shown to help alleviate allergy symptoms by reducing the body's histamine response. Consuming raw, locally sourced honey can act as a natural immune booster, helping the body build tolerance to pollen and other allergens found in the environment. Additionally, honey's antimicrobial properties can help soothe irritated nasal passages and ease congestion caused by allergies.

Honey for allergies

Honey is often suggested as a natural antihistamine due to its potential to alleviate allergy symptoms. While some studies suggest honey may have mild antihistamine effects, the evidence is inconclusive. It's thought that honey's trace amounts of pollen could help desensitise the body to allergens over time. Honey also possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may contribute to its potential therapeutic effects on allergies.

When asked about its usage for allergies, Mansi Mehta, a Raipur based nutritionist said, “As a nutritionist, I often recommend incorporating honey into the diet for its natural antihistamine properties. Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, honey can help alleviate allergy symptoms by reducing histamine levels in the body. You can add it to your herbal teas and enjoy over yoghurt with some berries. Its soothing effects make it a delicious and effective remedy for seasonal allergies.”

However, the concentration of pollen in honey is typically low, and the amount needed for significant relief may be impractical. Moreover, individual responses to honey can vary. While it may offer relief for mild symptoms, severe allergies require professional management. Those allergic to bee products should avoid honey to prevent adverse reactions.

Organic vs conventional honey

Rohit Mehrotra, co-founder Organic tattva says, “Organic honey sets itself apart from conventional varieties through adherence to strict standards, ensuring bees forage on organic nectar sources free from synthetic pesticides and GMOs. Beekeeping practices prioritise colony health and welfare, often placing hives in pesticide-free areas to preserve purity. Sustainable beekeeping methods promote biodiversity, habitat preservation, and natural pest control, reducing environmental impact. By conserving pollinators and their ecosystems, organic honey production supports agricultural biodiversity and contributes to sustainable food systems. Choosing organic honey not only guarantees a high-quality product but also aligns with environmentally conscious consumption, promoting practices that safeguard both bee populations and the planet's health.”

How to ensure the authenticity?

Due to a variety of honey brands available these days, the users find it a little difficult to check the authenticity of honey. There are several steps involved in finding the authenticity of honey. First, look for certification labels from trusted bodies like USDA Organic. Then, one should verify products using online databases or apps provided by certification agencies. Read labels carefully, checking for transparent information about sourcing and processing. Purchase from reputable sources like trusted retailers or local beekeepers known for ethical practices. Also, be cautious of unusually low prices, as they may indicate adulteration. Opt for locally sourced honey whenever possible for added assurance of authenticity. Stay informed about industry news and developments through consumer advocacy organizations.

By following these steps, consumers can minimise the risk of purchasing adulterated or mislabeled organic honey and ensure they're getting the quality they expect. Naresh Kumar, founder of Scrolling Bee who makes organic honey, says. “Well, the thumb rule for buying honey is to buy from a small bee keeper as his output is less and he does not have to worry about overhead and storing honey issues. Buying from a small bee keeper automatically reduces the chances that honey will be adulterated.”
