Tips to use chia seeds in savory dishes

From Chia Seeds Parfait to Chia Oatmeal, these tiny seeds are mostly known to be a breakfast delight. And how about adding these omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and essential minerals like calcium- and magnesium-rich seeds to your savory treats? Sounds interesting? According to Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford universities, these seeds are packed with soluble fiber and form a gel when soaked, and this gel does three things. First, it slows down sugar absorption. Second, it feeds your gut microbiome. Third, it helps you poop better. So, if you are bored of eating the sweeter version of these seeds, here are a few ways you can enjoy them in savory dishes. Take a look.

2/6

Thicken Soups & Sauces

If you are making soup or sauces at home, then instead of using corn flour, use some soaked chia seeds. It acts as a natural thickener. Apart from adding texture and thickness it also adds a nutritional boost to your dish.

3/6

Savory Chia Crackers or Flatbreads

While making crackers of flatbreads, you can mix chia seeds with flours, herbs, and spices to create crunchy, fiber-rich delights. Enjoy it with dips or sauces seasoned with chia seeds.

4/6

Use in place of egg

While making patties and cutlets, use soaked chia gel in place of eggs and it works well as a vegan binder. One can also add them to koftas instead of egg or breadcrumbs for texture and nutrition. The combination of 1 tbsp chia with 2.5 tbsp water works best to get the right consistency and texture like beaten eggs.

5/6

Add to Salads or Buddha Bowls

While making savoury salads or Buddha bowls, you can simply sprinkle raw or soaked chia on top for a gentle crunch and added nutrition. It works just like flax seeds or sesame and is highly nutritious.

6/6

Chia-Crusted Tofu or Paneer

If you are vegetarian, then simply coat tofu or paneer cubes in a chia-spice mix and lightly pan-fry or bake. It forms a crispy coating while packing in healthy fats and makes for a healthy snack with no guilt attached.
