Beer is better for you than milk, says PETA

Is beer really healthy?

It’s commonly advertised that ‘alcohol consumption is not good for your health’. However, in a recent conflicting statement by PETA, it’s been proven wrong. According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), ‘beer is healthier for you than milk’. Let’s get deeper into this statement. In the beginning, from a young age, we all have been told about the importance of consuming milk, and it is essential for our proper growth. In fact, drinking one or two glasses of milk daily was mandatory in most of the Indian households due to the health benefits milk provides.

2/7

The research

In an official statement, PETA said, “It's official: Beer is better for you than milk. Studies show that beer can strengthen bones and extend life, while milk is linked to obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Drink responsibly: Don't drink milk.” This has come as a shock to people but PETA has made this claim according to the research report of Harvard School of Public Health. It has come across as an effort by PETA to make more people adapt to veganism. However, this claim is quite conflicting.

3/7

Is beer beneficial?

It is still a point of debate if beer is actually better than milk. Beer, which is known to be an alcoholic beverage, has quite a few surprising health benefits. Brewed from cereal grains such as malted barley, wheat, maize, and rice; beer promises to contain essential nutrients. It is 90 per cent water and includes soluble fibre, calcium, iron, and many more nutrients. Beer is also an antioxidant.

4/7

Other beer benefits

Beer is known to help boost bone health. It has dietary silicon which is important for the growth and health of bone and connective tissues whereas milk has been linked with serious health issues such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and cancer. They are also believed to be the cause of conditions such as acne, mucus, with symptoms of lactose intolerance.

5/7

Benefits of milk

Enjoyed throughout the world for thousands of years, milk is known to be the healthiest drink anyone can have. It has several nutrients present in it and is advised for people of all age groups. Milk is necessary for the overall development of a human being. It is a debatable topic whether milk consumption is healthy or harmful, all we can say is that excess of anything is bad.

6/7

Milk vs beer

It is said that milk tends to promote heart diseases. Milk is believed to be a risk factor for atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease (CHD) due to its content in cholesterol, saturated fatty acids and lactose. Whereas beer raises good cholesterol in your body and prevents damage from bad cholesterol. It also stops blood from clotting which can be both a good and bad thing.

7/7

Conclusion

Beer may provide benefits that are healthy for us than what milk provides us but it is still alcohol. PETA’s claim, though for a good cause, is contradictory and might encourage people to consume more of beer, which might be harmful. Excess of anything is good, and control is the key.
