Amla Navmi: Why a day is dedicated to worshipping Amla, the super superfood
Amla Navami is an significant festival celebrated in the Hindu culture during which the devotees worship of the Amla tree, also known as the Indian gooseberry. It falls on the ninth day of the fortnight known as Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar. This year the Amla is celebrated today on November 10, 2024. The day is rich in all religious and cultural aspects signifying the spiritual and health properties of this sacred tree.
On the day of Amla Navami, devotees fast and chant prayer lists even do puja (worship) beneath the Amla tree. It is considered to be the day for worship in the presence of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi; a person is believed to be receiving the grace from both of them when he or she worships beneath the Amla tree on this day. The devotees first sprinkle holy water, Ganga Jal, at the root of the tree for purification before they begin the rituals. Thereafter they light a ghee lamp and worship with flowers. The devotees then revolve around the tree, offering water is considered to make Goddess Lakshmi pleased, bringing wealth and prosperity to those who participate in these sacred acts.
Worshipping the Amla tree on Amla Navami promotes both physical and mental well-being. Its medicinal properties are believed to cure ailments, boost immunity, and enhance vitality. Hindu texts highlight the tree's sacred energy, which is thought to heal diseases and improve longevity.
