How these drinks help boost liver health

The liver plays a crucial role in the human body. It acts as the body’s natural detoxifier, filtering out toxins from the blood, breaking down harmful substances, and metabolizing drugs and alcohol. The liver also plays a crucial role in digestion by producing bile, which helps break down fats and absorb nutrients. But sadly, the erratic lifestyle habits have placed the liver health at risk. Addressing the same, Dr. Joseph Salhab, an expert in digestion, liver, pancreas & nutrition, recently shared a list of 9 drinks on Instagram that he swears by for a healthy liver. Take a look at his recommendations, their benefits, and how to make them at home.

Matcha

According to Dr Joseph, matcha contains EGCG-rich antioxidants that support liver fat metabolism and hepatic blood flow.
How to make: ​Sift 1 tbsp matcha powder in a bowl. Pour 1/2 cup hot water and use a bamboo whisk to mix it well. Add a little bit of honey and enjoy it straight for a pure and earthy flavour.

Green tea

Green tea is rich in catechin antioxidants that help the liver handle fat and maintain healthy perfusion, states his post.
How to make: Boil 1 cup of water and dip one green tea bag in it. Let it steep for 3-4 minutes. Remove the tea bag, add lemon juice and honey and enjoy. Regular consumption may help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and blood pressure, improving overall heart health. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may help reduce acne and signs of aging.

Black coffee

As per Dr Joseph's post, chlorogenic acids found in black coffee backs healthier liver fat levels and microvascular blood flow.
How to make: Boil 1 cup of water, add 1-2 tsp of instant coffee powder, stir well. Enjoy!

Black tea

As per his post, theaflavin antioxidants found in black tea assist liver fat handling and endothelial function. Black tea also contains tannins that support gut health and may help reduce bloating and indigestion.


How to make: Boil 1 cup of water, add 1 tsp tea leaves to it. Bring it to a boil again. Strain and serve hot.

Beetroot juice

According to Dr Joseph, betalain antioxidants plus nitrates found in beetroot boost nitric oxide and hepatic blood flow, which aids healthy liver.
How to make: Take 2 beetroot, peel, wash and dice. Add them in a food processor and juice them. Add some salt and pepper and lemon juice. Enjoy it fresh.

Pomegranate juice

Punicalagin antioxidants found in the juice aid liver fat processing and support healthy perfusion, states his post.

How to make:
Take 2 medium-size pomegranates, de-seed them, add in a blender and pulse for 20 seconds. Use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to separate the juice from the pulp. Pour in a glass, add a pinch of black salt and enjoy.

Hot cacao

According to Dr Joseph's post, cocoa flavanols raise nitric oxide and support liver blood flow and further aid a healthy liver.


How to make: Warm 1 cup of milk, add 2 tbsp cacao powder, whisk well until fully dissolved. Once done, add a pinch of cinnamon powder, and serve hot.

Turmeric-ginger tea

As per his post, curcumin found in turmeric and gingerol antioxidants of ginger help promote bile flow and help with fatty liver and keep it healthy.


How to make: Boil 1 cup of water, add 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, and 1/2 inch ginger. Bring it to a boil and strain, Add 1 tsp honey and 1/2 tsp lemon juice. Stir and serve hot.

As per Dr Joseph's post anthocyanin-rich antioxidants found in berries assist liver fat metabolism and microcirculation, which further keeps the liver healthy.


How to make: Take 1/2 cup of strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries along with 1 banana and 1 cup of yogurt. Blend them well and stir a teaspoon of honey. Serve fresh.
