6 types of Indian rotis under 100 calories and how to make them

Roti is comfort. It’s warm, satisfying, and pairs beautifully with dal, sabzi, or a simple smear of ghee. If the goal is to eat lighter or be more mindful of calories, here’s some good news—rotis don’t have to be heavy. There are plenty of Indian-style rotis that stay soft, full of flavour, and fit well under the 100-calorie mark. Many of them bring along health benefits too, and they’re simple to whip up at home.

2/7

Jowar roti

Made from jowar flour, this roti is naturally gluten-free and high in fibre. Each one comes in at around 90 calories, depending on the size. It’s soft when hot, slightly nutty in flavour, and goes well with any kind of curry. Jowar helps in keeping you full without weighing you down, and it’s great for digestion too.

3/7

Bajra roti

Bajra, or pearl millet, is the perfect flour to turn to when you want something warm and grounding. A small bajra roti has around 95 calories, and it offers a good amount of iron and fibre. Bajra keeps the stomach happy and is especially comforting during the colder months. Just make sure to serve it fresh and hot—it’s best that way.

4/7

Lauki roti

Bottle gourd doesn’t get the attention it deserves, but in roti form, it shines. Grated lauki kneaded into atta gives a soft, moist texture, and each roti stays under 90 calories. It’s cooling for the body, supports digestion, and is especially helpful in summer. It’s also an easy way to sneak more veggies into your meals.

5/7

Ragi roti

Ragi, also known as finger millet, is calcium-rich and great for building strength. A medium ragi roti contains close to 85 calories, and it’s a smart choice for anyone looking for a low-GI option. Add some finely chopped onions or grated carrots into the dough for extra texture and flavour. It tastes delicious and feels light after eating.

6/7

Kaddu roti

Pumpkin adds a touch of softness and natural sweetness to regular dough. It’s light, rich in fibre, and keeps the roti moist without needing extra oil. A plain kaddu roti stays well under 100 calories and goes great with simple sabzi or dahi.

7/7

Methi roti

Fresh methi leaves added to whole wheat flour make this roti slightly bitter, a little herby, and full of flavour. One small methi roti contains roughly 95 calories. It’s rich in iron and antioxidants, and is great for boosting metabolism and overall wellness. Eat it with curd or pickle and it becomes a simple, satisfying meal.
