5 easy bread-based desserts you’ll want to make every week

Got leftover bread? Perfect. Because some of the best desserts start with that humble slice sitting in your kitchen. Whether it’s a soft pav, a few slices of sandwich bread, or that fancy sourdough loaf you forgot about, bread makes an ideal base for warm, gooey, sweet treats. These aren’t your basic pudding recipes; these are the kind of easy, comforting desserts that hit the spot and have you reaching for seconds without thinking twice. Scroll down and see for yourself.

Shahi tukda, but make it creamy

This old-school Hyderabadi dessert takes regular bread and turns it into something rich and festive. Usually, the bread is deep-fried, soaked in saffron and cardamom syrup, then topped with thick, creamy rabri. But if frying feels like a bit much, just toast the bread in ghee. You still get that lovely nutty flavour. Finish with some chopped pistachios and rose petals, and it’s ready to serve with a hot cup of chai.

3/6

Bread halwa for the win

Bread halwa is pure cosy food. Tear up a few slices, toss them in ghee till they look nice and toasty, then pour in some milk, sugar, and cardamom. Let it all come together into a soft, sweet mess. Throw in some cashews if you’re feeling fancy. That’s it. It’s rich, slightly fudgy, and way quicker than most halwas, perfect when you want something warm and sweet without spending all evening in the kitchen.

4/6

Chocolate bread bake that feels like cake

Got a chocolate craving that won’t quit? This is the answer. Just rip up some bread, toss it in a dish with bits of dark chocolate hiding in between. Mix some eggs, milk, and vanilla, pour it all over, and bake. That’s it. The top gets all crispy, the inside stays soft and melty, and the chocolate kind of sneaks into every bite. It feels fancy but takes almost no brainpower. Eat it warm with ice cream and thank yourself later.

5/6

Malai toast you’ll want for dessert and breakfast

This one feels all fancy but it’s actually super simple. Just toast some bread till it’s a little golden, then pile on thick malai mixed with cardamom. Drizzle some honey, add a few saffron strands on top, and that’s your dessert. It’s creamy, a little crispy, and sweet enough on its own. If you’re trying to keep it light, use jaggery and brown bread. Still tastes amazing.

6/6

Custard-soaked bread pockets

Soft bread slices stuffed with fruit compote or jam, folded into triangles, dipped in a simple custard mix, and shallow-fried or baked till golden. Dust with cinnamon sugar or serve with warm custard on the side. They’re basically stuffed French toast, but more versatile and Indian kitchen-friendly. Great for using up slightly stale bread and turning it into something surprisingly elegant.
