The right way to consume turmeric

The season is changing, and hence it is important to take extra care of the immune system. As per Ayurveda, one of the easiest means to boost immunity is by adding a pinch of turmeric in every meal. Turmeric, often called the “golden spice,” is known for its powerful immunity-boosting properties. It is rich in curcumin, a bioactive compound with strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, and helps the body fight infections, reduce oxidative stress, and support overall immune function. According to a study by PMC, curcumin interacts with various immune cells, including macrophages, dendritic cells, B cells, T cells, and natural killer cells, to enhance the body's defense capacity. It inhibits inflammatory responses by suppressing multiple metabolic pathways, reduces production of inflammatory cytokines, and increases anti-inflammatory cytokines, thus balancing the immune response. Turmeric also has antiviral, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties contributing to infection resistance. Here we have listed 5 common ingredients that one can combine with turmeric to boost the immune system.

2/6

Black Pepper

It contains piperine, which enhances curcumin absorption from turmeric. Also, as per studies, pepper contains antioxidants and piperine, which may help prevent free radical damage to cells, reducing inflammation and possibly boosting overall immunity. Additionally, black pepper stimulates leukocytes, which increases immunity against various pathogens.
How to consume: One of the most popular ways is to boil water with turmeric, ginger, and black pepper; strain and sip warm.

3/6

Ginger

As per experts, ginger adds anti-inflammatory and antioxidant power to turmeric and helps with better respiratory and digestive health. As per a 2024 study ginger’s active compounds like gingerol, shogaols, paradol, and zingerone, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help boost immunity. The compound gingerol in ginger helps reduce joint pain, muscle soreness, and inflammation.
How to consume: One can make a detox drink by blending turmeric, ginger, black pepper, and lemon juice into a concentrated wellness shot. Also, one can add a small piece of fresh ginger and a pinch of turmeric to fruit smoothies for a spicy, antioxidant-rich twist.

4/6

Honey

It has natural antimicrobial properties that soothes the throat and supports overall immunity. As per a PMC study, honey stimulates production of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and IL-6 by immune cells via interactions with Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and they help regulate immune responses and promote the body's defense mechanisms.
How to consume: One can simply mix 1 teaspoon turmeric powder with 1–2 teaspoons raw honey and take a small spoonful daily on an empty stomach. Also, they can be combined to make an immunity shot. Simply blend turmeric, honey, lemon juice, and a pinch of black pepper for a quick morning booster.

5/6

Warm Milk

They together make the classic “haldi doodh”, which improves nutrient absorption and helps fight infections. As per experts milk contains vitamins D and A, which have important roles in regulating immune cells and enhancing epithelial barrier function, critical for preventing infections. Also, milk fermentation by gut microbiota also produces short-chain fatty acids that help strengthen immune defenses.
How to consume: The best way to consume them together is via Haldi Doodh, where you boil 1 cup milk and add 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder and bring it to a boil again. Add a pinch of black pepper and enjoy it hot.

6/6

Lemon

It is said that vitamin C from lemon with turmeric’s curcumin creates a strong defense against colds and flu. As per PMC, lemon boosts immunity due to its rich vitamin C content, a potent antioxidant that protects immune cells from oxidative damage and supports immune functions like enhancing white blood cell activities such as chemotaxis and phagocytosis. Apart from this, lemons contain antioxidants like flavonoids and proanthocyanidins which have anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects, helping regulate inflammation and supporting immune defense.
How to consume: Simply mix warm water with ½ teaspoon turmeric and juice of half a lemon; drink on an empty stomach. You can also add a pinch of black pepper to boost absorption and a drizzle of honey for taste. Alternatively, make turmeric lemon tea, boil water with turmeric, strain, and add fresh lemon juice before drinking. This soothing drink helps detoxify the body, supports digestion, and gives a natural morning energy lift. Regular intake is also believed to reduce bloating, aid liver function, strengthen immunity, and provide anti-inflammatory benefits, making it a gentle daily ritual that balances wellness and comfort. It may also help improve skin glow, reduce oxidative stress, support weight management, enhance nutrient absorption, and promote overall vitality, making it a versatile addition to your morning routine. Additionally, it can calm mild digestive discomfort, encourage hydration first thing in the morning, and offer a subtle metabolic boost, turning a simple drink into a powerhouse for holistic well-being and daily rejuvenation.
