Fennel seeds, or saunf, are a popular herb known for their medicinal and aromatic properties. From Ayurveda to nutritionists to medical science, this herb has proven itself at all levels and is commonly found in Indian kitchens as a mouth freshener. But did you know that this humble herb can help soothe your digestive system in many ways? Yes, you read it right. In Ayurveda, fennel seeds are known for deep digestive and carminative properties. They are considered tridoshic, meaning they balance all three doshas. They are said to stimulate digestive fire, which helps relieve bloating, gas, and indigestion without aggravating Pitta. According to a study, these seeds contain compounds such as anethole with antispasmodic and carminative properties that relax gastrointestinal muscles, reduce bloating, gas, and cramps, and improve digestion by stimulating digestive enzymes. Chew them raw


It is suggested to chew a teaspoon of fennel seeds after meals, as it helps stimulate digestive enzymes, reduce bloating, and freshen breath also. According to a clinical study, it was found that chewing fennel seeds for 5 minutes significantly raises salivary pH immediately afterward and for up to 30 minutes, without letting the pH drop below the critical level for enamel damage.

Fennel tea



To make this tea, simply boil 1 tsp fennel seeds in 2 cups of water for 5–7 minutes. Strain and sip warm. It is said that this tea eases indigestion, cramps, and acidity. It is said that fennel tea boosts digestive health with the help of the compound called anethole, by relaxing the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract due to its antispasmodic properties. It also promotes the release of digestive enzymes, thereby improving food breakdown and nutrient absorption. Fennel has natural antibacterial properties and a refreshing taste that helps fight bad breath. It also helps loosen mucus and relieve cough or minor throat irritation due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Its mild sedative effect calms the nervous system and promotes better sleep. Fennel water

This is best consumed on an empty stomach. To make this, soak 1 tsp fennel seeds in a glass of water overnight. Strain and drink the water in the morning to improve metabolism and digestion.
