Summer evenings in Camp and Kausar Baug these days are incomplete without grabbing a bite from the various stalls selling Ramzan delicacies. The alluring fragrances of fruits, sharbat, savouries and desserts, after two long years of ordering-in, are bound to pull you towards them. Here’s a lowdown of the desserts that you can try if you are in the area.

Kunafa

Creamy and nutty Kunafa

Price: Rs 59

Kunafa or Knafeh is a traditional Middle Eastern dessert made with a spun pastry called kataifi, or sewai soaked in a sweet, sugar-based syrup called attar, and typically layered with cream, pistachio or nuts.

Baklavas

Crunchy and sweet Baklava

Price: Rs59-79

A layered pastry, baklava is made with filo pastry, filled with chopped nuts, and sweetened with sugar syrup or honey. You can also try the pista, walnut or mixed nut versions of this delicacy.

Rich and creamy Umali

Price: Rs99

Umali or Umm Ali is a traditional bread pudding that is also Egypt’s national dessert. The dessert has a base of bread, topped with sweetened milk or cream, roasted coconut flakes, dry fruits and nuts, and baked for a while.

Warbath

Sweet and flaky Warbat

Price: Rs 59

It is an Arabic sweet pastry that is very similar to baklava. It consists of layers of thin phyllo dough filled with cream or custard, and topped with pistachios, walnuts, or almonds. The dessert is topped with a sweet syrup with a hint of lemon.

Qubani Ka Meetha with malai or ice cream, anyone?

Price: Rs 60

Khubani or Qubani ka Meetha, a specialty from Hyderabad, has a compote-like texture and is made by boiling dried apricots in syrup, topped with dry fruits.

Basbousa

Melt-in-mouth Basbousa

Price: Rs 49

Originated in Egypt, Basbousa is a sweet, syrup-soaked semolina cake. The batter has semolina, coconut and dry fruits, is baked in a sheet pan, and then sweetened with honey, orange flower water, rose water or simple syrup and typically cut into diamonds or square shapes.

Delicious Matka Rabdi

Price: Rs 75

A favourite for most, the dense, condensed milk is served in matkas or kulhads.

Double Ka Meetha

Saffron-soaked Double Ka Meetha

Price: Rs 70

Also known as Shahi Tukda, this is another variant of bread pudding with fried bread slices soaked in a saffron flavoured sweet milk, topped with dry fruits.

Dudhi Halwa

Price: Rs 70

Dudhi halwa has bottle gourd as the prime component. It is cooked in milk and sugar and is topped with dry fruits.

The unmissable phirni

How can one miss phirni during Iftar? A bowl of creamy deliciousness, phirni is similar to kheer, but made with rice paste, instead of whole rice.

The last two years have been difficult for each one of us. So, it feels good to see people returning to grab a bit. At present, we are getting 25-30 per cent orders online while the rest are walk-ins. Apart from desserts, our cheese samosas and falafels are selling like hot cakes
