Ursula von der Leyen’s bandhani mashru power look
In another moment of appreciation for Indian handlooms and textiles, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wore creations by Indian designers at the banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. After wearing Anamika Khanna at the India-EU Summit on Tuesday, she chose a turmeric-coloured coat and scarf designed by FDCI designers Abraham & Thakore for the banquet.
Bandhani and mashru in the spotlightThe turmeric-coloured coat and scarf were crafted using the ancient Indian tie-and-dye art of bandhani , traditionally practiced in the regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The coat is made of mashru – a specially woven silk-and-cotton fabric from Gujarat. It is embellished with contrast colour-engineered kantha hand stitching. The accompanying silk scarf, finished with contrast pink piping, adds a refined accent.
