Dare to stay out late during cold winter nights?

We dare to say that no one likes to freeze in winter, as cold bodies quickly lose energy, making our movements stiff and urging us to stay indoors. But cold weather doesn’t have to put an end to your outdoor outings, unless you’re not dressed right and don’t have the right gear to walk and explore freely, even in the dark. Right?

2/6

Start with the 3-layer rule

A good rule for cold-weather outings starts with dressing appropriately, where you’re comfortable, can move freely, and feel warm. Many times, we find ourselves under tonnes of layers, which end up making us feel irritated and overdressed. To avoid this situation, one must understand the good 3-layer winter rule, which will keep you warm, help you move around freely, and make you look stylish.

What do you mean by the 3-layer rule?

The 3-layer rule varies from person to person and depends on how cold you feel. But this system has worked for the majority of people and is a safe choice for all. As the mercury drops, it's appropriate to wear proper layers, where the 3-layer rule starts with a base layer, then a sleek mid-layer, and a warm outer layer, which can protect you from harsh winds. Let’s understand each layer’s purpose and what exactly you need to wear.

Wear a base layer

This layer is right above your skin and should be extremely comforting, soft, moisture-wicking, and light. You can pick a full-sleeve, high-neckline, sleek sweater that can trap heat without biting your skin. This layer primarily wicks moisture away from your skin and keeps your body dry. You can look out for synthetic fabrics like merino wool and polypropylene. Avoid cotton, which usually holds moisture and can make you feel cold. Go for thermal cardigans, long underwear, and skin-tight leggings, which remain close to the skin.

Wear a mid-layer

Your mid-layer should do most of the work of keeping you warm, but you need to tone it down a bit and find a balanced fit. The mid-layer provides insulation to trap body heat, and you can opt for fleece and sharp woollen choices, which allow moisture from the base layer to pass through and should be highly breathable. You can look out for fleece jackets, down vests, and woollen sweaters. In extra-cold places, this second mid-layer is perfect for extra insulation.

Wear an outer layer

The outer layer should always be windproof, waterproof, and breathable. Your outer layer keeps precipitation off your insulating layer so it can keep doing its job. Opt for a material that will protect you from wind, rain, and snow. Choose a waterproof and windproof shell that is also breathable and allows you to move freely. Try a full-length overcoat, trench coat, blazer, windproof jacket, or hard-shell jacket.
