Bollywood pays homage to Nauvari sarees

A saree is more than just a garment, but it's a representation of femininity and a canvas for artistic expression in the Indian culture. With a plethora of drapes to choose from in Indian history, we’ll talk about the Nauvari saree today. Mostly worn in the Maharashtrian region, it is one of the oldest Indian draping styles, which has a nine-yard piece of cotton and translates to 'nine yards'. Nauvaris are also known as Kashta or Namda vastra. Let’s seek some inspiration from our Bollywood ladies and see how they draped this iconic drape and paid their traditional homage.

Rani Mukerji in ‘Aiyyaa’

Portraying the role of a Maharashtrian woman living in Pune in the film ‘Aiyya’, throughout the film, she was seen in simple and plain straight-fit kurtas with matching churidar and sheer dupattas. However, in a scene in the film, she’s seen draping a beautiful, bright pink saree with a contrasting golden border and minimal print on the bodice, draping it in Nauvari style, which added the perfect charm to her character.

Priyanka Chopra in ‘Bajirao Mastani’

Priyanka Chopra’s portrayal of Kashibai in the film ‘Bajirao Mastani’ left people swooning for more. With the vision of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, she took us back in time and was seen in stunning Nauvari sarees. As the wife of a Peshwa, her accessories and drapes had all royal detailing. But, when she wore a stunning deep purple Paithani in Nauvari style in the song ‘Pinga’ with a floral motif shoulder-length blouse, she honoured the Maratha empire and women with sheer grace and resilience.

Kriti Sanon in ‘Panipat’

In the 2019 film ‘Panipat’, Kriti Sanon was seen portraying the character of Parvati Bai and looked phenomenal in Nauvari sarees. She wore the popular combination of green Paithani with a stunning red border that had subtle embellishments of royalty. She completed the royal appearance with the Maharashtrian nath, chandrakor bindi, and green glass bangles and proudly honoured the rich history of Maharashtra.

Deepika Padukone in ‘Bajirao Mastani’

Deepika, who played the role of Mastani in the film ‘Bajirao Mastani’, was mainly seen in Mughal- and Rajput-inspired outfits. Leaving us mesmerised in sheer anarkalis and stunning embroidered flared lehengas, her one attire left people in utter awe. She wears a deep maroon Paithani saree with golden polka-dot embellishments in the song ‘Pinga’, where the matching traditional golden jewellery and neat Nauvari drape were a nod to the Marathi culture.

Rashmika Mandanna in ‘Chhava’

In the 2025 release ‘Chhava’, Rashmika Mandanna played the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s consort, Yesubai. Throughout the film, she’s seen in stunning Paithani sarees dipped in shades of green, maroon, purple, and golden with contrasting borders. All draped in Nauvari style, she was neatly able to pull off the style with regal grace, making her fans proud and the film a huge success.
