Indian fashion brands owned by Indian royal families

Have you ever heard about Indian royalty entering the fashion and apparel industry? We have all heard about their lavish hotels and resorts, but these royals have quietly blended aristocratic lineage with modern craftsmanship over the years. This has resulted in iconic fashion brands that are truly ruling the fashion world. Whether these brands are founded by a maharaja or simply preserved and backed by royal families, they heavily influence the products and give you a hint of luxurious Indian heritage. Let’s take a quick look and start the shopping spree.

The Royal Silk of Mysore

The silk industry in Mysore dates back to the era of Tipu Sultan, but over the centuries, it lost its charm due to new rulers. But, in 1912, Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar founded the Mysore Silk Weaving Factory for royalty and revived the legacy of Mysore silk. Post-independence, the factory was taken under the Mysore State Sericulture Department, and in 1980, it was handed over to the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation. The former royal family of Mysore, led by Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, continues the legacy started by the late king.

Gwalior

The Scindia royal family of Gwalior city heavily supports the brand, which is known for its Chanderi weaving art, which is popular in the region. It was founded in 1947 by GD. Birla and has two key areas: the historic Gwalior Suitings (Grasim) and modern Dennison Fashion. The Scindia royal family heavily supports the company, where they have also collaborated with designers like Rahul Mishra and have showcased their art and designs. The Maharajas of Gwalior were influenced by the Western changes but at the same time preserved traditional details, which combination is often seen in their collection.
