Shantanu & Nikhil’s show ‘Play right’ began with screening of snippets from Woody Allen’s films and his focused engagement with the psyche of the city. The collection attempted to depict the stages of a woman life, how she gains maturity, finally surrenders, and in a sense of coming into her own begins to assert herself. The backdrop of the luxury fifties set the tone for the script.
Collection: Like a celebration of sensuality and femininity, the range boasted flowy dresses in black and white towards the beginning, to scarlet red in the last phase. There were satin dresses with pintuck panels, ruffle gown, ruffle top, satin dress with ruffle details, and black body suit in cream silk jersey to name a few. The range brought long-forgotten satin ruffle tops and gowns in vogue. We couldn’t help crow about the black knee-length satin dress with white self appliqué wound around the shoulders. The progression from black and white to black and red was so subtle like the breaking of a reverie.
There was a lot of freshness in the balloon hem satin dress and the red satin gown with frill details.
So, how does Shantanu & Nikhil explain their theme? “It is a matter of perspective. We are not saying what is right and what is not,” says Nikhil. “We’ve introduced some Swarovski elements to the design to give it a contemporary feel,” he adds.
Top trends to watch out for Colours: Black was teamed with white and subsequently black was teamed with fiery reds to make an intense statement, just as the sartorial script demanded. Over all the collection unfolded a lot of drama and femininity. Such a range can be easily worn to cocktail parties, card parties etc.
Detailing: The strong interplay of duchess satins and silk jerseys added a touch of old-world luxury to the line. We didn’t miss the intricate jewel-like Swarovski crystals on the signature Shantanu & Nikhil drapes.
Accessories: An occasional model carried a delicate grey purse with Swarovski detailing on it. Besides this, none of any note.
Glitzy front row: Jas Arora, Tanisha Mohan, AD Singh, Thenny, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, Ekta Chowdhry, and a whole array of Delhi socialites, former models and designers were spotted watching the show intently.
