Move over junk and bohemian. For the citys chic, this is the age of spiritual bling, meant to soothe your soul, enhance your spiritual powers and bring good omen in your life. Spiritual jewellery has become the latest craze among youngsters who are rediscovering their spiritual side by flaunting it. Says college student Ridhima Singh who always wears a chic Ganesha pendant around her neck, Its the coolest thing to flaunt this season.
Spiritual jewellery is being touted as trendy and thanks to designers, now there is no dearth of super chic designs when it comes to spiritual jewellery. Wearing spiritual jewellery makes me peaceful and I feel closer to God, adds Ridhima.
Agreeing with the trend, jewellery designer Ravi Ajmera of Ravi Jewels says, The spirituality wave has caught on strongly and spiritual jewellery is an extension of the same. A lot of young people are buying spiritual jewellery as they are entranced by their distinguished look and the mystic element associated with them. So, youngsters are taking their pick from Shiva, Ganesha, Om, Huanuman and Sarasvati pendants, bangles and ear-rings. Even rudraksha beads, believed to be the tears of Lord Shiva, worn by yogis for enlightenment are being used to create some exclusives pieces of jewellery. Ajmera says that the most favourite among youngsters are his necklaces that have huge rudraksha beads and pendants with carved figures of Gods and Goddesses. Some designers are making use of joint rudraksha beads encrusted in gold to create exquisite jewellery. Designer Sunita Shekhawat says, Joint rudrakhsa necklaces are a hit with young fashionistas. Then there are pendants that have huge jade base with kundan work. Jade has calming effects and ushers in clarity of thought and wisdom. The designer says that even Srinath Ji pendants are immensely popular.
Gemstones like topaz, ruby, rose quart, moonstone, turquoise and jade have also caught the fancy of youngsters. We are selling bangles and pendants with images of gods and goddesses and jewellery studded with gem stones. Earlier, only the older generation wore such stuff but now youngsters are quite drawn towards them. Thats probably because spiritual jewellery now comes in the most interesting designs that go well with the modern tastes of youngsters, says jeweller Devang Shah. Jaipur based designer Ashish Khandelwal says he caters to a lot of career oriented youngsters who have been advised by astrologers to wear particular stones. The popular stones worn by youngsters these days are emerald, yellow sapphire, pearl and coral. They look very pretty when studded in gold or silver.
Talking about the healing powers of gems, Ashish says, Ruby is believed to bring fame and virtue. Pearl strengthens the mind, red coral instills courage, emerald enhances intelligence whereas topaz helps achieve better financial status. Those who wear a diamond have a luxurious life. Many young people are heading to astrologers who tell them what is best for them to wear.
Wearing spiritual jewellery does bring in good luck, agree our celebs too. You will rarely find me without this emerald ring my sister gifted to me. I feel that it has ushered in tranquility in my hectic life, says television actress Sonia Singh. Kaanta Laga girl Shefali Zariwala never departs with her diamond studded Om pendant. Diamond is my birthstone and this diamond pendant was gifted to me by my mother. I absolutely believe in the miraculous properties of the pendant, says Shefali.
